68 Custom hubcaps

I bought a set of what I thought were 68 1/2 ton hubcaps. When they arrived they were from a 3/4 ton truck with the clips. I did a little measuring and if I cut this extra lip off and roll the edge they will work for my 1/2 ton.

Here is the BIG QUESTION
Should I modify these for my truck? I have heard that the 3/4 ton hubcaps are even harder to find than the 1/2 ton.

Re: 68 Custom hubcaps

Good question. I will look at my 68 1/2 ton caps and my 68 3/4 caps to see. I have seen many more 3/4 ton caps than 1/2 ton caps in my many searches.

Re: 68 Custom hubcaps

I checked the 3/4 ton caps and they are made from three (3) pieces. It would be a risky proposition and you might ruin some good caps. I have seen plenty of the 1/2 ton painted caps; "over the nub style" not the 1/2 ton clip style, which are rare.

I have some old GMC stainless 3/4 ton caps that are trashed. I could send you one for shipping and you could experiment on that.

Re: 68 Custom hubcaps

Thanks for the offer, I did have 5 of the 3/4ton hubcaps one went under the knife. It fits pretty well, the edge needs to be rolled better. I actually have 3 of the original 68 chrome dog dish hubcaps and one of the 67 chrome hubcaps but they are not in great shape. I have yet to find a source for aftermarket hubcaps like mine.

Re: 68 Custom hubcaps

Here is a picture of my handi-work. As you can see the hubcap on the left still has the extra ring.
I used aircraft stripper to clean the paint off, then took my grinder with a wire brush and cleaned them down to bare metal. After using a dolly and hammer to get most of the dents out, one got primed the other started to get polished.

Re: 68 Custom hubcaps

I've seen both a metal plate that screws on and a plastic piece that slips in. They come up on the parts board from time to time.
