I have 3.07's right now and the diff. is in perfect shape. And i need everything to just get the 3.73's in. I think i might spool the gears instead of posi, or if someone knows about a substitution for posi, that would be most appreciated
Thanks jason

The conventional wisdom is that spools are only for the dragstrip. Since I have in the past driven a spooled vehicle on the street for 20,000 or so miles I can say that you can get away with it IF...
You have large tires with high sidewalls that will flex You dont make sharp U Turns often You dont drive in snow or rain or ice much . Better slow to a crawl around corners if you do. You Dont use C Clip axles ( physically impossible anyway ) Fact is you stand a good chance of breaking your axles with a spool on the street. I was using 31 spline Currie axles and I still twisted them some. If they were stockers I would probably have broken them . Its not a good idea.

I have a set of 3.73 posi in a 6 lug axle. I'll trade you straight up for your 3.07 axle. You do the shipping.

Can't you guys just swap out the axles? You keep your 5 lug axles and swap rear housings and gears? I dunno just a thought, I am also looking for a 3:73 posi, mine is a 3:07 5 lug posi.

If you guys can work out a swap that is the best deal.......but....if you end up needing to buy gears I think I would spend the little extra and get new ones. I wouldn't think saving a 100 bucks on 30 year old set ups is worth it. I just bought an Eaton 3.73 Posi from Randy's Ring and Pinion for $270. They matched Tom's differential price...they are normally $340. I got the ring and pinion for $150 and the install kit for $80. So, for around $500 it is all brand new. I know that is a lot but there is zero worry with it. Just my .02....
And again, if a trade can be made then that would be cool.

I am o most positive that the axels will swap except if the rear end 's changed width in 71 . because they are both 30 spline axels . the posi carrier in my truck is from a 69. Good luck

I have heard Pro's and Con's with these....and I have no experience with these either, but Loc-Rite is an alternative to a "posi" unit.
http://www.4x4cyberstore.com/website/lockright.html Now.....The New VS. Used - I would buy new peices if it was me.....because it is gonna cost ya to have used peices installed in your rear-end if you pay to have someone else do it ... and what if, after having them installed, you find out they are noisey (aka:worn)? Then you gotta pay again to have them re-done... Why pay to have used parts put in, when you can spend just a little more and have new parts put in that you know are good. May cost a little less at first....but could cost more later.....that's a chance you take every time you buy used parts..... I had rather spend a little extra on new....and know I am getting good parts....especially when you are talking about spending that kind of money. Just my take on things......
