Re: anyone used this before?
Good luck noticing any power increase, looks pretty gimiky to me. If you want forced induction thats not it.

Re: anyone used this before?
I was reading "How to build Max Performance Chevy Small Blocks on a budget" by David Vizard and he reckoned that changing to outside air feed from a shaker hood scoop on his Transam at 100F against drawing in underhood air at 190F he gained 25 ft/lbs of torque across the rpm range equating to 26HP at 5500rpm. Thats not to be sneezed at, most modern cars draw in nice cool air from outside the hood for a reason!

Re: anyone used this before?
for sure.. cold air intakes are just plain good sense.
now... OUR underhood temps vs underhood temp of a coupe? if i thought my intake charge was getting really warm air, i'd buy one of these in a heartbeat. i've had cold air intakes on just about everything else i've ever owned. maybe someday when i have a couple extra dollars laying around

Re: anyone used this before?
If its not horribly expensive I think it would be worth it. Your getting a colder air charge from outside of the engine compartment. I don't know what kind of ambient temperatures there are where you live, but theres a +1% power increase per 10 degree drop in ambient temperature. You may not get enough to feel but it will be there all the same. Carbs like their cool dense air....

Re: anyone used this before?
put a nice screen on the inlet tubes in the radiator support? I had a '86 swb and the stock intake tube went to the front radiator support. I don't recall having too much trouble with things crawling or getting sucked in the tubes. anything that came in, the filter catches most of any debris

Re: anyone used this before?
the thunderbolt was based off a fairlane, not a falcon.
There are other advantages to cool air; you can run more timing you can reduce octain requirements more power/torque better MPG cleaner emissions with the frontal area, there will be a little bit of ram air effect one you are up to speed, but it would be marginal at best. Now, granted, you won't get ALL of those... it depends on what way you tune and drive it. Later model cars not only have it, but are required to maintain it under federal smog laws... not just new cars, but I think 74 was when it was required on cars. That paper hose that rotted out and no one bothered replacing (in many states) was a corm of cold air induction. The part that sucks, you'll have to cut huge holes in your core support to do it properly. I would use smooth pipe instead of that ducting, just like on the exhaust, smooth is better than bumpy. As for the bug comment, that's what your air filter is for. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 10-13-2008 at 07:13 PM. |

Re: anyone used this before?
Y'all can laugh if you want, but this made a very noticable difference in my S-10, especially in 4th and 5th gear. No mpg improvement, but I didn't lose either. Will I be racing with it anytime soon? HELL NO But it really helps my little truck fly down the highway better now

Re: anyone used this before?
I have a junkyard aircleaner ( came from a 79 Cadillac El Dorado) air cleaner fits the 4 bbl Rochester fine and has an intake tube 4 inch diameter. Used a metal 4" flex hose ( like for a clothes dryer ) and air intake is on left (drivers side) . Slanted the flex tube down to near bottom of wheel well. Draws outside air but with no ram effect.

Re: anyone used this before?
I remember cleaning out the standard cold air intake in the 93 surburban.. I pulled a dead bird out of there.. ran better after that... (till the wife dumped the transmission!)
