Starting 72 rear axle install..

Well I got some stuff yesterday for my rear end, hopefully i will have time to do it this week end. Im still trying too get back on my feet since the storm (IKE) anyways thats all im going say about that. So for i have cleaned and painted the axle and installed new brak shoes. I have new u-bolts and gasket for cover. I got the thing from pick-a- you know the rest, last year. Inspection inside was good. its from a 1972 1/2 burban with 4.11s. Iwas thinking swapping 3.73s from my 6lug axle, but im just ready to put that thing under my truck and be that closer to being finished my truck.

Re: Starting 72 rear axle install..

PB Blaster and a BFH. You can get lots of things done with just those two items.

From the PB Blaster site-"Quickly breaks loose the surface tension of frozen parts and protects against further rust and corrosion."

Spray it down, let it sit a bit, then beat the hell out of it. The rust and scale should break down and allow the bolts to be driven out.

Re: Starting 72 rear axle install..

If you have a torch you can heat up the area of the trailing arms where the U bolts go thru and that'll break them loose. Don't get it too hot though. If nothing else you can cut the U bolts off and then you have a little more room on the topside to swing a BFH to drive out what is left in the trailing arms.

I used to use PB alot, but tried "Deep Creep" and it kicks the rust out of PB.

Try it for yourself, that and a lead hammer.

Re: Starting 72 rear axle install..

I personally cut the U-bolts as low as possible making 3 pieces. The arch was basically cut out.

I then pulled the trailing arm off the cross member and then I sprayed the heck out of the bolt and let it penatrate the trailing arm. I then flipped the arm over on its top and pushed down and the bolt pushed down and well the nut side pushed out. Just make sure you put all of the weight on the cut off bolt not the trailing arm its self.

Oh I forgot to mention I did lower the arm as low as I could with it still connected and U-bolt cut and gave it a few good wacks with a peice of wood under it so I could hammer the nut side down. The trick of course being I soaked the arm with PB blaster the day before and just before I hit it. AFter I hit it a few times with a small hammer I then used some channel locks and twisted the U-bolt then I took it off and did what I mentioned in the paragraph up above.

Looks like you bought the same bolts as I did.

Re: Starting 72 rear axle install..

Man I am finished with the install of the rear axel. Ran into a couple of problems 1) The washers that lmc sent were to big to fit the bottom of the shock bracket, So im glad i did not thow anything away 2) My panhard bar dont fit anymore, but my truck is sitting on its own weight, Oh yeah the72 is a little wider then the 66 rear. do anybody know were the best priced panhard bar are? Chris..

Re: Starting 72 rear axle install..

Hey gulf....when I took my 'burb apart the rear shifted to one side. I think they can be under load one way or another. I was laying under the truck pushing the frame with my feet and the rear with an arm trying to get the bar on to the mount. It was one of the many BFH moments working on that stuff. Your arm is probably still sore from taking out those U-bolts.

Re: Starting 72 rear axle install..

NO.....you'll have to move the trailing arm mounts and the '72 uses the short panhard bar. So you'd be best off to transfer the panhard bar and it's mount from your current rear end to the new one. In other words, cutting and welding required.

Only 63 and newer is it a bolt in. Your trailing arm pads are different width apart on the earlier trucks.

I get mine from a business that specializes in new and rebuilt automotive springs. You should be able to get them from a good auto parts supplier such as NAPA.
