5.7 mounting question
I have a 1996 5.7 engine I am trying to place in my 71-72 frame. I tried to set it down in the frame today, and the stock manifolds hit the frame before the mounts will sit down on the mount stands. Ive never tried to put a vortech in this year truck but know it can and has been done. The mounts look like they will line up if the manifolds were removed, allowing the engine to go down. Also what crossmembers will need to be removed, relocated or added to accomodate 5.7/ L460e? Thanks for your time!

Are you motor mounts correct for that year sb. What was in the truck before? The 6cyl and 8cyl mount towers that go from the frame to the crossmember are different.

the frame im using was a 6 cyl truck. I already changed the mount towers and believe they are correct. I looked at a friends 72 with a 350 in it and the towers im using look like his. I just pulled the mounts off one of the old inline 6cyls i have and they bolted on the vortec, but Im wondering if the mount height is the difference. thanks

Larry, I will be following this one, I am doing the same exact thing. My engine and trans is the exact same year you are installing. A write up with pics would be nice.

Ok. Im going to get some new correct mounts for the 5.7. The ones I stuck on there are a "lil hairy" but Im thinking the manifolds are the problem. If the manifolds werent on there it looks like it would sit right in. Will a set of headers off 67-72 350 fit 1996 5.7? Thanks

you just need to get the correct manifolds for a 67 - 72 4X4, or headers.
The tranny cross member will need moved... that's it. |

Meh, headers are just a good way of ruing starters and keeping yourself busy chasing exhaust leaks. Keep the later model exhaust manifolds. I just finished a similar deal into a ’72 and wanted to keep the EFI manifolds for the sake of keeping the O2 sensor in the manifold rather than putting an O2 bung in the exhaust pipe. I ended up using 1976 engine towers to clear the exhaust manifolds.

Longhornman nailed it. The later style drop down manifolds won't work in these trucks. You need ram horn manifolds or headers.

I have a 98 Vortec 350 and 700r4 in my truck. It sits in it just like an older 350 and TH350. But you have to cut the brace out that the I6 mounted to, and you are also gonna need to put a auto steering column in your truck. I didn't recieve the stock manifolds with my motor so I just bought a good set of headers
