Crate Motor From Summit

Is the 260 HP 350 crate engine from Summit a good motor to get? Should I be concerned about it having the 2 piece rear seal ( I have heard they leak), and not having a roller cam? I'm going to put it in my 72 and will be using it just for around town. Summit has it for around $1,550.

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

make sure you have the rest of the parts figured in as well... intake, carb, HEI, brackets, alternator, fuel pump, balancer, pulleys, wires, plugs, flywheel/flexplate etc...

As far as the rear main? well they had two piece seals forever and they will leak someday, but not for a long while I bet...

sdailey has that engine...

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

Probably one of the best crate motors you can buy for the money. They might not be high HP screamers, but they get around good and have a waranty. As far as the rear main goes, I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

I've had a lot of small blocks over the years, and I never had any major problems with the rear main seal leaking on the 2 pc rear mains. The good thing about them is that if you ever have a problem they can be changed with the engine still in the truck versus having to pull either the engine or trans to change the seal on a one piece block. I think for what you want to use the engine for, it's a pretty good deal. I really wouldn't be concerned that it's the older style 2 pc seal at all if it were me. ...Joe

No, they don't come with anything really. Just meant to be a repalcement engine. My ol man had one in one of his work vans and it was a damn good engine. It would pull a 4 ton Bobcat no problem. That same load wouldn't happen with the 305 that it replaced.

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

Thanks guys. Looks like a good deal. Only other thing I noticed is that our trucks aren't listed for it to be covered by the 3 year warranty. Not sure why that is?

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

I thought the warranty was just for the motor, why does it matter what vehicle it goes in?

Good question. I'm sure there is a good explanation for it though.

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

These are the vehicles it lists for the warranty:

When installed in the following vehicles, these engines carry a 36-month or 100,000-mile warranty:

* 1975-78 Chevy/GMC pickup (C1)
* 1975 Chevy/GMC Blazer, Jimmy (C1)
* 1975 Chevy/GMC van (G1)
* 1978-80 Chevy/GMC van (G2,3)
* 1979-85 Chevy/GMC pickup, Suburban, Blazer, Jimmy (K1)
* 1979-80 Chevy/GMC pickup, Suburban, Blazer, Jimmy (CK1)
* 1979-80 Chevy/GMC Suburban (CK 1, 2)
* 1979-85 Chevy/GMC Suburban (CK 1)
* 1980-85 Chevy/GMC van (G1, 2, 3)
* 1981-82 Chevy/GMC pickup (CK1)
* 1983-85 Chevy Caprice Classic, Impala (B)
* 1973-80 Chevy Corvette (Y)
* 1984-85 Pontiac Parisienne (B)

If this engine is installed in any other application, it has a 12 month or 12,000-mile warranty.

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

Just helped my buddy install that engine in his 72 Chevelle last month. It is perfect! I would definitely recommend that motor and at $1500 its a great value.

It does not come with an intake or water pump, but does include oil pan, valve covers, timing cover. It has multiple holes for motor mounts and accessories so you can use it as a replacement for pretty much anything. It runs fine on the cheap gas and makes good power. Very mild cam, would be good for a truck. Torque is 300 ft-lbs! What is cool is everything is NEW from GM, not a rebuild.

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

The 260 should be a good motor for you. I went with the next one up at 290hp. I bought mine from Scoggin Dickey out in Texas and they had free shipping. At the time I bought mine I paid @$1700.

Here's the website....http://www.sdpc2000.com/

Like msgross said, these motors come bare bones with no accessories at all so keep that in mind as well when figuring your overall cost.

Good luck with your decision.

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

go to your local dealer and get a price from them before buying from Summit. I know our local dealer can get a better price than anyone else. They got my dad the 290HP version for $1400 with tax. The same engine from Summit is $1900!

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

I put the 290 HP version in one of my trucks. Great value at $1,470.00 - bought from Summit during one of their sales!

Re: Crate Motor From Summit

I called some local dealers, and they wanted $2,000 for the crate motor. Most places have them $1,500 and $150 to ship. Would have to pay tax at the dealer. Seems as though the GM dealers don't need the business.
