Is it any good rockwell transfer case

I just traded for a 72 long bed truck that I was told is sitting on a73 4x4 frame. Pulled body off frame found transfer case to be a rockwell. I`ve never had no dealings with one always had new process. Is rockwell any count or do I have a hunk of scrap iron.

Re: Is it any good rockwell transfer case

The Rockwell 221 is a solid transfercase, but not as nice as sturdy as an NP205. For normal use, you shouldn't have a problem. If you're going to be doing some rock crawling, you may want to look for something else.

As far as I know, a 73 truck shouldn't have had a Rockwell. I should be either a NP205 or a NP203.

Many of the rockwell cases had PTO capabilities, so that is a plus if you're going to use the truck as a work truck.

A buddy of mine rebuilt the rockwell in his 66 3/4 ton. He found the kit on the web and found a parts case at the swap meet for $50.

Re: Is it any good rockwell transfer case

Thanks for the info,I really wonder about the running gear on this frame was told it was a73 chevy but don`t know for sure.I thougt it should have a new process instead of the rockwell. It also has a funny rear diff. it has an inspection cover but the chuck loads from the front its 3/4 ton but I haven`t ever seen this on a GM.

What you are describing, with a Rockwell and the corporate H052 is a 1967 or '68 chassis at the newest. Is the Rockwell married to a 465, or is the tranny a 420 with a divorced Rockwell?

Its hooked to a 4 speed its not divorced, also the rear end sorta does look like 9 inch ford. Sound like I gotta bunch of scrap iron. But thats how my luck goes, fall in a pile come out smelling like the pile.

Re: Is it any good rockwell transfer case

Is there any numbers on the frame so I can find out what year it is. If it where 67,68,69 frame the 72 body I pulled off should have lined up with all the body mounts and it diddn`t .The rear cab mounts on the frame were a good 6 inches away from the 72 rear cab mount bolt holes.

Re: Is it any good rockwell transfer case

The numbers on the frame are just part of the vin #, but if my memory serves me, it will give enought to find the year. The numbers are on the drivers side top of the frame a little behind the steering box location.

Re: Is it any good rockwell transfer case

Thanks i`ll check it out. Thinking about posting the 72 body in the parts for sale . It is pretty good body haven't found any rust in it and its got descent paint. Its got a big hole in center of cab floor where it was on 4 speed frame and thats all I wanted was the running gear.
