Rim Rubbing Issue?
Ok Question...I have 8x15" Rally rims with 275x60x15" tires (I think). The Tie Rod (I think that is the correct name) rubs the innner rims when you turn about half way. "See picture" It has a 2"-4" drop. What might be the cause of this? Thanks

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
I think the tie-rod will either always or never rub. With drop spindles and 15" wheels, the lower control arm often rubs the wheel during sharp turns. I have used a set of western chassis that don't and some mcgaughy's that do. If it is the tie-rod, check the hub bearings to see if there is any play.

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
The donated hub assembly came from a 71-72 and I thought the 15x8 Rally's were to fit w/o rubbing issues. Would my 16x8 " TT II rims fit any better?

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
I think Jim must be in another topic..
If you can see where the rim is contacting the tierod you might hit it with the grinder just a bit or try a 1/4" thick spacer between the wheel and the hub. That just might be enough.

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
I had to find a set of rims that had a little different offset to clear the tie-rod ends on my truck. All the other rims I found either touched or barely cleared.
I am not 100% positive, but I believe the clearance issues has to do with the drum brake set up on our trucks. Please correct me if I am wrong. At least this is what I was told from the place where I got my rims from. The trucks with drums had clearance issues with standard offset rims... Don

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
So my TT II's will also have problems? Curt said he could heat up the "Bars" (?)and move it 1/4" or so...that way it will be out of the way. But would that cause me alignment issues?

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
How about a pic of the interference? I would advise against heating and bending anything. Rallys were made for discs so they should be clearing the tie rod ends. 16s will give you 1/2" more clearance.

Dwane, I am not suggesting that your body shop is whack or anything, but please be careful about heat warping your front end stuff to fit. That sounds a little scary to me. Remember he won't be the one driving it if something breaks because the metal lost some of it's strength when it was heated. Alignment issues will be the least of your problems if that happens. Don

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
Ok...so what it sounds like is I need about 1/2'" back spacing. This would solve the rubbing issues. I agree...to heat things up to bend the bar could play games with the alignment or other possible problems. I thought the rally rims were fit w/o any rubbing issues.

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
I called Curt and asked him not to make any "heat Treat" fixes. I asked him to install one of the used 16x8 TT II's that I recently purchased and hopefully the interference issue will be resolved. If that doesn't fix the issues then it looks like I will need to buy another set of wheels with the correct back spacings and I will put up my 16x8 TT II's and my 15x8 GM Rallies up for sell.

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
On my '69, ECE components (2.5-inch drop) are used with Wheel Vintiques 15x8 w/4-inch backspace on the front. No issues with anything rubbing in the six years I drove it before tearing it down for a "redo".
On my '96, DJM components were used (2-inch drop up front) and we used 15x8's with 4-inch backspace and the inside of the wheel came into contact with "stuff". Went to a 15x7, and the clearance we needed was there. Even the stock aluminum wheels wouldn't clear. I wanted to go to a 16x7 or 8, but no funds were available. I know the extra inner diameter will be adequate if I ever do. 17's will be even better.

Thanks for the info...I did not install the Rallies until after the drop and thats when I noticed the rubbing issues in turns. I recently purchased the used 16x8 TT II's recently so I am hopeing they have the back spacing that I need for clearance. Back spacing never came to mind when I dropped the front. Live and learn.

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
Ok...problem solved I think. The 16x8 TT II's I bought were in a truck with a 3 1/2"--6 1/2" drop with no rubbing issues on the front. This tells me the back spacing is sufficient to provide the needed clearance.
Life is good!

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
No drop spindles & stock 8" rally wheels rub? Never would have guessed that. Ive seen them rub the lower control arms with drop spindles but never with stock spindles.

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
My mistake...yes they do have drop spidles. I never knew that once you installed drop spindles it might cause interference issues. The Rallies were not an issue with stock spindle. I thought I installed the Rallies after the drop but in memory...I had the Rallies installed before the drop and after the drop is when I experienced rubbing issues. As we say it's an on going learning process.

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
Dadnabbit! I had accepted that I might have to grind a bit on the lower control arm when using the 8" rally with a drop spindle but I didn't know the thing could scrub the tie rod end too!
Say, you don't have "heavy duty" tie rod ends on it or is it a 3/4 ton steering linkage or something on there do you? Thinking maybe your tie rod ends are larger than normal 1/2 ton stuff.?

Re: Rim Rubbing Issue?
I just realized today I have the same issue its the first time i moved the truck since putting it all back together a few months ago. I've got a 71 GMC 1/2 ton with factory disc lower a frames and after market tubular uppers with drop spindles and the tie rod barely rubs a weight on the back of the 15X8 rally wheels the real problemis when you turn sharper the lower a frame eats the hell out of the inside of the rim, looks like i'll have to trade for a couple of 7's. Glad you guys were talking about this thanx!
