51 chevy bed please help
my dad has a 51 chevy sitting in our backyard.. we havent started to work on her because im currently redoing my 72 chevy.. but we are wondering where to find a bed for it because we bought it for 500 bucks and it has no bed..the cab has the body work done and painted... but we couldnt pass up the deal for 500 bucks..but we looked at lmc and they want like 500 for bedside another 500 for fender... if we make our own bed it will be like a few more grand then if we found one and salvaged it... where should i look at to locate one... i live in salina, ks and no junk yards here have anything that old

Re: 51 chevy bed please help
renegade8720 asked the same question and it looks like Mar-k has the best bed and service. What eles came with the cab (frame, engine tranny)? Once you add the cost of a new bed, fenders, braces, floor it gets expensive then add shipping. You could always check craigslist (you could post a wanted add for the bed too) also check your local paper for one. If your finish date is not soon you could always continue the build without having the bed till you find a deal on one (i'm sure you already know that). You could always ask here, and see if anyone has a bed or fenders that they are willing to sell. I have the rear fender braces if you need them. I'm not use'n them because they are too short now that I did the s10 swap. PM me if you want them and I'll ship them out to you. It's not much but it's a start.

Re: 51 chevy bed please help
I don't really care for the look myself, but there are some that have grafted late madel (S10?) beds onto their AD trucks. If you're just looking to get it together as inexpensively as possible, perhaps that would be the route to go?

Re: 51 chevy bed please help
When I decided I wanted a better bed on my truck than what I had I looked at over 50 beds and didn't find one better than what I had even though some of the sellers cussed me for not buying theirs.
You can build your own fairly easily by having a sheet metal shop cut and break the metal for the sides. You can buy the stake pockets (corner posts) from vendors or use a spot weld cutter to take them off a bed that has bad sides. I still think I would buy new from Mar-K as the cost comes close to equaling out when you spend time and gas chasing parts for a bed and then spend time or money to repair the used parts you have. 1167 bucks isn't that stiff compared to paying todays asking price for a so so used bed and then spending a couple hundred hours making it decent enough for paint. http://www.mar-k.com/catalog/catalog...=19501950CS-36 One of the things you might check into is to see if they show up at any swap meets or Car shows closer to Salinas as often the manufactures have serious car show prices plus you could save the shipping or road trip costs. I've been offered some great deals at Goodguys events by vendors on Sunday afternoon when they don't want to load the stuff up and haul it back to the shop.
