Here is what the guy emailed me. Is it a good deal? Would it be an after market grill or because it has letters is it a GM Grill? What would you offer him?

"Asking $500 -1969-1970 chevrolet truck grill with letters. I have both inner and outer grill. Both parts have never been installed. Bought 5 years ago and no longer own the truck. Most truck websites and catalogs are selling this combination for over $1000.00 now. "

Its not a real good price for $1000.00 You can still buy them from GM dealers.But don't expect them to be perfect either they can still have flaws in them. Have you seen it? Check with your local gm dealer and see what they will sell you one for first.

If it isn't in a GM box, or does not have a GM part # sticker on it it is not original.

I'd just give the guy the $500 he's asking for if they are new GM pieces. I am a parts manager at a Chevrolet dealer, and I just checked availability on these parts. The inner grille is no longer available from GM. The last published list price on it was $204.04. The outer grille is still available, and the list price on it is $829.00! Even if your local dealer gives you a pretty good discount, you still cant buy them for $500. Also, if you can look at them first, you are better off too. Any more, when I get these from GM, more often than not they arrive damaged. Sometimes it takes 3 or more tries to get one that isn't beat up. That happened when I ordered an outer grill for a 1972. I had to order several times because they kept coming in damaged. Finally they didn't have any more in stock to ship to me, and they were discontinued. That could realistically happen at any time with the 69-70 grille too.

The thing pisses me off about even the later GM grills is that none of them are correct. You got a very good deal on that combo and I would have bought it in heartbeat, but it really torques me up that the dealers are charging $800+ for a grill that is not correct. You have to find a leftover unused GM grill from the 70's or early 80's to be correct. GM changed them sometime in 80's for some stupid reason, and all the aftermarket companies followed suit on the non-correct grill.

No. The original assembly line outer grilles had the black paint stripes that went from headlight bezel to headlight bezel. The later GM/REPRO grilles stripes end in a "C" before each bezel.
