what should I do?
hi guys, I've got a hot rod truck, with a 383 stroker in it. all i really do with it is beat on it, and i don't do any hauling or towing with it really. its not a daily driver, i have another truck, but i do drive it like a daily throughout the summer.
I want to put a transmission in it. i cant decide weather a 700R4 with a wicked shift kit and a 4000 stall, or a M21 or M22 Muncie four speed would be more fun. i know the 700r4 would be the cheaper route, because the four speed would need everything as in clutch linkage, clutch bell housing etc. what do you think i should do?

you ever think of putting a tremec 5 speed in there. back in august 07 custom classic trucks mag put one in a '66. the kits from classic chevy 5 speed (www.classicchevy5speed.com). its for '60 to '72. they have 2 versions, good up to 600lb-ft. im saving up money to get one for my truck.

that kit looks VERY impressive. that has actually almost swung me to the 5 speed.
if the price is right i think i might be placing an order. has anybody had any experience with this kit?

The Tremec kits are expensive. You have to email classicchevy5speed for a price quote, but this place offers a complete kit for a 55-57 chevy car, which should be somewhat similar, and it comes in at $3,200.
http://www.classicchevy.com/product....9&dept_id=1857 If you want to use a 700R behind a motor with power you're going to want one that was built to handle it, and don't forget about kits for lock up and to make sure it shifts right (like the bowtie overdrives lock up kits and TV made EZ kits.) That could get pretty expensive. I have no idea how much a M21 or 22 goes for, so what do you consider cheap?

i know can get a built 700r4 for around 1200 bucks. plus some for the high stall, and a little more for the setup once i have installed it.
i know the standard will be for pricey because I'd need everything to make the swap. things like a clutch pedal and linkage that i already would have had.

You can't go wrong with a good 'ol TH400 or TH350 unless you MUST have an overdrive. An automatic is a super simple install. Drill a few holes for a nice shifter, slap in a B&M shift kit and you'll be snappin necks in no time. Piecing together and installing factory manual hardware could be a nightmare. Your way off on the stall BTW, 4000 is just plain crazy. I only run a 3000 with a transbrake! You'll want a 2500 at the most on the street. You wont see any better performance with anything taller... just make a bunch of noise and burn gas.

I'm not looking for efficiency, nor am i looking for something thats totally tame on the street. I'm not even looking for all-out performance. I'm looking to build the funnest thing i can.
I know that the 4000 stall would be dumb, and id probably end up with traction issues, but boy would it ever hit hard! now looking into it, I'm thinking about a 700r4, 4000 stall and some of the money saving going into some 4.11 or 4.56 gears in the rear.

unless you're going to be on the highway alot all those fancy expensive overdrives are pretty much a waste of money// if you're primaraly just doin stoplight to stoplight around town type driving you'll b alot better off with the muncie 4speed or a built turbo350// a really well built custom 700R4 that's going to take it you'll b up around the $2500 range when all is said and done you cansave a thousand by going turbo 350 if you're not doing a load of long distance hiway haulin

I'm going to sound like a d!ck no matter how I say this but It wont even hit at all with a combo like that. 4.11s would be ok but stalls dont "hit". I used to think that, for example, a 4000 stall was like DUMPING the clutch at 4000rpm. Not the case at all. It will feel like you have a slipping clutch the whole time. Unless you're pushing 500+ hp a 4000 stall will make you engine SCREAM leaving a stoplight like an old lady. Granted, you may leave the line at a better spot in the power band but over all your performance will go down the drain. I'm just trying to help dude, honestly. But, you may be a lot like me and have to learn throuh personal actions.

i always though that a high stall WAS like dumping the clutch...so really its like feathering the clutch?
how do guys lauch so hard on pinks with an automatic then? i thought a 4000 stall would being to stall at like 3700, and then WHAM, it was in at 4000...

i have a T350 as it stand, but ive already had second gear fall out of it twice. the guy who built it said that its the weak spot in a T350, and that you cant make them shift very hard for that reason.
would i be better off just swapping to a turbo 400? anybody ever herd of/ used a gear vendors setup?

get a different tranny builder TH350's can be built to take 800-900horsepower by a COMPETENT perfomance tranny shop//and they shift real fine thru all 3gears

but when comparing the T350 to a 700R4, what are the first gear ratio's? i herd the 700R4 has a real low first gear, which could be fun

If you have a healthy engine a stall will "hit". My '82 Z28 brings the left front tire 2 foot off the ground at the track with a 4000 ACC converter. Feathering won't do that! It won't on the street because even my 28 X 12.50's can't totally hook it up unless I'm at the track. They do feel like they are slipping when you are not at WOT. If you flash it from a dead stop, it locks up hard. If it doesn't, something is wrong. If you are looking foir economy, the TH350 would be a much better choice. The low 1st gear of the 700R4 is great, but they kinda fall on their head when they go to 2nd. The TH350 is a way better racing transmission, and you can build a much better TH350 than you can a 700 for the same money.
