2004r bolt pattern same for....
just wanting to know if the chevy bolt pattern are the same as oldsmobile,buick,pontiac,trans bolt pattern? i understand they're all gm,but not sure of bolt pattern... wanting to change from th350 to 200 4r ...

apparently most 2004r's were used in olds/caddies/buicks, but they did make a bell housing that would fit both chevy and other GM, so if you have one of these bell housings you should be ok, if not you can look for this special bell housing, i know my fathers 87 caprice came with a 2004r. see the image and info below

GM made three different bellhousing to engine block bolt patterns, in order of commonality:
1. Dual pattern to fit BOP (Buick Olds Pontiac) or Chevy-most common 2. BOP only 3. Chevy only I have only seen one BOP only, and no Chevy only 2004r case. Granted, I do not rebuild trannys for a living. |

Chevy used a 200r4 in the Monte Carlo SS'S and some of the other mid sized and full sized Chevy's. There is a tag on the passenger side of the trans with a two or three letter code on it. I used to have a couple of Buick Grand Nationals, and they had a 200r4 in them The letter code was BRF. they are like hens teeth to find and pricey. I found a two letter code unit that we put into a 55 Chevy and it was SWEET. The letter code is a calibration code. I do not remember where I found it, but on the internet if you do a search you can find the ones that will have a nice firm shift. They did use these in some Caprice and Impala's and they can be mussy when shifting.
i JUST WENT LOOKING FOR THESE LETTER CODES AND CANNOT FIND WHAT i WANT. If you are looking for a 200r4, I would think the prefered would be a monte Carlo trans. Last edited by cparman; 02-17-2009 at 07:08 PM. |

thanks 67 C-30!! The 200r4 will stay together behind a bunch of horsepower. watched a bunch of Buick GN's making 400-800 hp use one of these trans. I looked since my last post and cannot find a web site to reference the prefered letter code 200's. will keep looking. I like the 200 as well as the 700 OD trans. We put a 200 in a 55 Chevy wagon, and it had a prefered letter code. Shifts nice, a nice firm bump when changing gears. lock up works off the brake pedal, and has a toggle switch for manual lock up. Just fun stuff !!!

I had an '81 Impala wagon that had a 200R4. I also looked at an '84 Suburban 4wd that also had a 200R4.

The Buick GN/T-Type 200r4 trannies were built with a lot of hardened parts that the standard 200r4 had. I had a 87 T-Type with the 3.8 SFI Turbo and when I had to get it repaired (I was hard on it!) the hardened parts were not availible. Buick GN guys started leaning on the Buick Engineers to release the hardened parts to the market. By the mid 90's we had the parts needed to repair the GN 200r4 trannies as they should have been.
