Need Steering Column Help
Well, I've tried finding the answer to my questions on the board, but since I don't know what these parts are called, I'm having a difficult time.
Number 1, can someone tell me the correct terminology for the parts circled in the attached picture? Number 2, can someone tell me how much play these SHOULD or SHOULD NOT have? Right now, I can slide it in and out a bit both within the boot (yellow arrow) and where the u joint grasps the splines (blue arrow). I hope this makes sense. Once I know the correct names of the parts, I can probably describe the problem better.

Re: Need Steering Column/Shaft Help
Anyone? Maybe a better picture will help. The two arrows show where I am able to pull the steering shaft back and forth. Can anyone identify the parts? And also, can anyone tell me how they are supposed to behave?

Re: Need Steering Column Help
Looked in both my overhaul books and there was nothing about that knuckle or boot or what ever it is called. It had the steering box overhaul and column parts all listed but nothin on that.

Re: Need Steering Column Help
That joint will slide, it acts as a ujoint. Now the clamp for the splined shaft should be tight with no movement. I would find out why it is loose. Worn splines or the clamp is loose.

Re: Need Steering Column Help
help me here guys, but the piece in the red circle should slide in and out ( move to and from the steering box ) The piece in the red circle is attached to the intermediate steering shaft??? This shaft attaches to the steering box with a rag joint ( looks like a piece of a tire ) and at the steering column with the piece in the red circle. The upper piece should slide in and out, but have limited side to side play. The clamp connected to the upper part of the shaft, when tight should have no play, nor should the rag joint.

Re: Need Steering Column Help
cparmn I agree. Shouldn't have no play where the clamp mounts on the shaft if it's in the detent and tight. The rag joint should be tight with very limited movement.

Re: Need Steering Column Help
Hmm, so by my second picture, the area marked by the blue arrow should be tight and not move, correct? And the part of the shaft marked by the red arrow should move in and out a bit but not side to side. This is what I gather from everyone's comments. I think the rubbery part must be the abrasion shield. And evidently, there is supposed to be some sort of spring in that housing. Does all this sound accurate?
Also, does the coupling assemby (by the diagram above) disassemble for repair or does it all just have to be replaced? Anyone else go through this?
