I would have to agree with
Longhorn man. That would sooner or later cut into the plastic a possibly stick. See if you can swap the ball joint to the other side of the arm or extend the cable brace.

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
Looking at your pic, that will not work. Spend the money on an adjustable bracket, and also alot of the issues people have is not putting the pivot point (ball) at the right location. this is something that has to be set right for the trans. to work and live more than a thousand or two miles , a little work now setting it up right will save you the cost of a new trans. and the time in labor to swap it.

hope you are adjusting the TV cable with a tranny line pressure kit, and not the lift and click method.

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
well, they aren't the strongest nor longest lasting.... but I'll pretty much agree, they are good enough for 95% of the ppl on here. It's the instalation.
Yeah, it ain't cheap to do it right the first time.... bet I'll bet you a kick in the daddy parts its cheaper than doing it again. |

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
You could bend the cable bracket outboard a bit to line the nozzle up with the cable.
However I agree with what everyone has said here so far. It's very important to correctly adjust the TV cable... getting it close isn't good enough. |

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
Longhorn, the mechanic that sold me the 700r4 said that 90%-95% of the 700r4 installs he does only require the ratchet method. Also, he's been a transmission mechanic for about 10 years at one of the biggest shops here where I live. He said if it only ratchets out one or two clicks it needs a better adjustment setup but if it comes out about half an inch, it should be very close to perfect. I'm getting my driveline tomorrow, can someone post proper shift speeds...like 1st should shift between "x" mph and "y" mph and so on...

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
does your tranny guy specialize in nonstock aplications?
I turn wrenches for a living too, however, that, and what we are talking about here have very little in common. The TV system is designed to be used as an assembly, from throttle body to tranny. If one thing gets swapped out with a non stock piece (stock to that vehicle) then everythihng is out of wack. You have a carb that was never OEM on anything, a bracket off of who knows what, and aftermarket intake, hooked to a cable that probably came with the tranny and a tranny that was probably made for a fuel injected engine anyways. Ask if your tranny guy will rebuild/replace it if it goes dead in 25,000 miles.if he says no, then go do it right. If he'll eat it in a year or two, then let him eat it. |

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
He said he installed one in his Monte Carlo last year. After a lot of thinking, if it don't shift exactly like it's supposed to, I'll order the bowtie kit! Fabricating that piece of metal is free, the kit is $120. I'm jus tryin to save some $$ for other things.

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
My tranny burned up after only 7K using an 80's something stock bracket with an edelbrock carb. It shifted fine until right before it blew. Took out 3rd and OD. I had to limp it home in 2nd. It was a used tranny, but it shifted fine in the Firebird it was taken out of and the fluid was clean/good with no burn smell at all. It *should* have lasted much longer.
I tried to save $ too. I spent the bucks on the Bowtie OD stuff (TV made EZ and lock up kit) and she's going strong with 8 or 9K so far on the rebuild. I also used a pressure gauge this time to verify she was shifting right. You asked us to tell you what we thought, and my thinking is that your tranny won't last as long as it should.

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
So basically, the bowtie product is the only product that will make my TV cable work correctly? I'm new to this whole era of trucks, I didn't know this about the bowtie TV kit.

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
I guess I was looking for help in the fab part of it. I've been to the bowtie site and know all about the product. But it's hard to believe that without bowties system my tranny will not work properly. I wonder what people did before the bowtie system! Anyone here have a 700r4 without the bowtie system? Does it work? If so, how did u do it?

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
My dad didn't need one for his truck, but he pulled the entire engine/trans from an 86 Caprice and put it in his truck. He just needed a lock up kit for the wiring. He had the correct/stock intake/bracket/q-jet to work with the tranny. If you have all of the correct stock parts it will work 100% fine.

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
why dont you just turn the screw from the cable from out to in see if you get a better angle and check if you get full throttle cause your tranny line goes only so far.

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
Done for the night?I hope.People are giving advise based on personal experience.I hope you`re not upset because you didn`t get the answers you wanted. You asked a question and get one answer within the hour, then want to leave?I`m confused.I`m sure in time you would have more input to your question.I don`t think anyone answered it yet.
rom what I get...the Bowtie kit will assure the proper TV cable set-up.You can do it w/o their kit,but you`re on your own.You may get it right, you may not. And,you don`t know until she blows. It doesn`t have to be obviously wrong to ruin the trans. We are trying to save ypu trouble down the road.

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
I think someone did make their own bracket on this site. Maybe someone knows who it is and can provide a link.
I think what he did was fabricate his setup so that it copies GM's system exactly, angles, rate and distance of travel, everything. I think he only made two or three cuts, some bends and a little welding. He did a good job. Here's a good website that provides some details: http://www.tciauto.com/Products/Inst...ble_adjust.htm |

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
When I was a junior in highschool, I had a local shop install an edelbrock carb and edelbrock performer intake on my 86 camaro with a 305/700R4. It lasted about 2 years when one day out on a date the tranny blew. I knew it was gone. Took it to a tranny guy and had him rebuild it using a b&m transpak kit and corvette servo. He installed the correct bracket. That tranny would break your neck in every gear and out lasted the engine when I threw a rod at 318,000 miles racing a mustang.
My point is, do like the rest say and get the correct bracket. $120 now will save thousands later.

Re: Look at these pics...tell me what you think
special-k: I asked a very specific question and was answered very quick. That was awesome. I believe the answer I got states that at the paticular angle my TV cable was positioned it would cut through the plastic. I logged out, went to work, came home and re-worked my bracket. THEN, my next question was about shift speed, ie; at what speed should my tranny be shifting IF my TV cable was properly adjusted. THEN I wrote that I would indeed buy the bowtie kit if my "bracket from who knows what" (Longhorn) didn't work! I got irritated with all the bowtie salesmen on this thread, that's all. Nothing personal, but if you gotta sell a product...then...you gotta sell it. It jus reminded me of when I'm hung over Saturday morning and a religious person is trying to convince me of something I really don't want! I got the point right away, tvmadeez is from heaven, everything else is from hell! LOL so it's not that I didn't get the answer that I wanted because actually I did, it's the bowtie salesmen that killed me!
