Amp gauge ?
I got a set of used sunpro gauges that are in good shape from a friend today.Hooking up the oil and temp are easy, but the amp gauge I'm not so sure about.I have heard that when you hook it up it stays on and drains the battery over a couple of mounths.Have anybody heard of this happening and what is the best way to hook it up,so it won't drain the battery?

Re: Amp gauge ?
Thanks dirtdobber and would you say that the amp reading is pretty accurate?

Re: Amp gauge ?
an amp guage wouldn't work as wired like dirtdobber described... that would be a voltage guage.
An amp guage will not kill your battery. It doesn't put a load on the system, it measures how much is going through the system. hook it up per instructions. if you have the choice, the volt guage is the better choice of the two. |

Re: Amp gauge ?
I would also recommend a volt meter. An amp gauge in my opinion is not worth the expense of hooking it up. Since all the current of your vehicle flows through it, heavier gauge wire is needed. It is also a fire hazard in by book. A volt meter can tell just as much about your electrical system, and is a lot cheaper and easier to hook up.

Re: Amp gauge ?
Actually they didn't come with instructions,so what would be the safest way to hook up the amp gauge? And what gauge wire should I use?

Re: Amp gauge ?
To monitor the charging system, I would put it in series with the large red wire off the back of the alt. Take the wire off the back of the alt, and connect it to the - on the amp meter, and run another wire the same size guage from the + terminal on back of the meter to the alt. I would guess the wire size at #10.

Re: Amp gauge ?
Also agree on using the volt guage. Sunpro does make a Volt guage also. I use the Sunpros in my dash.

Re: Amp gauge ?
Hey graygoose, or should I say Gray Ghost do you enjoy making up making up fake names, to post bogus questions and fake bogus responses. I am glad I spent the time to answer your question. Thats funny there is a gray ghost that has an aka dirt dobber, and a gray goose that had a response from a dirtdobber?

Re: Amp gauge ?
Check these threads for more on your questions. It is important to know what year vehicle you have because the pre 67s used a different style ammeter. This is explained in the two threads below.
Also when replying to a poster you should quote his post so that there is no doubt who you are talking to. It was obvious in this thread but in a longer one it could be confusing. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=324105 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=326782
