My first old truck
This is my new old truck 1971 GMC Sierra LWB factory 396, 400 Turbo tranny, factory A/C, Mechanically the truck is in GREAT shape. However the body is not looking so hot. I got it from my father-in-law, he gave me the inner and outer rockers, cab corners, and the rear cab mounts. After closer inspection it is probably going to need a cab, because the floors are in bad shape too. Any ideas or input will be greatly appreciated.

Re: My first old truck
have you though about buying a full floor pan that way you don't have to mess with the vin tags and you will know the floor will be rust free.

Re: My first old truck
I am willing to do whatever I need to. How much difficult is it to swap the cab as compared to replacing the pans? I also forgot to mention that there is rust coming in above the windshield.

It's just work whos scared of work? Realy it's up to you I will say that most of the parts that rust out they make replacements for just so you know.

Re: My first old truck
I am taking it to a neighbor tonight to get an idea of how difficult it will be to replace or repair. He is going to help me with the body work. Keep your fingers crossed and I will keep you updated.

Re: My first old truck
Well my neighbor had some not so good news. It looks like the time and money to fix everything it needs is going to well exceed the cost of replacing the cab. So now I am in the market for a cab I am going to look at a cab Sunday. And to make things even better, the glove box, and body emblems say its a 396 the sticker on the inner fender says its a 402.

Re: My first old truck
welcome and that is too bad about the cab, but anything can be fixed with a little time and money, either way you go, it will work out.

Re: My first old truck
Thanks Nuke, I doubt mine will ever be as extensive as the build you have going on, but you never know. Congrats on the baby girl, I have a strange feeling that we will have to make a place for a carseat in mine before this is all said and done.

Thanks Grease. As soon as the weather breaks I am moving it to the shop next door full heat and air and it will be the only thing in the 30 x 30 shop.

Re: My first old truck
Well I got the inner fenders off, all the interior out and the back jacked up. Depending on the weather I may be able to drop the rearend and start cleaning the frame and rearend and get started on painting it. FYI if anyone had a radiator support for sale let me know. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics

Re: My first old truck
That's how my build started.... I backed my truck into the garage to replace a radiator and do a little cleaning up and then, well I wound up unbolting this and that and then the next thing I knew I had a cab, bed, fame and a shop full of parts....

Re: My first old truck
The good thing is that no motor work needs to be done. Quite a bit of body work but nothing for the motor LOL. It has 81k original miles on it and 12000 since it was rebuilt.

Re: My first old truck
you have a great starting point! dont get down about your floor! my cab was in pretty bad shape and was able to save it and bring it back to life for $550 for full floor, rockers, kick panels, a&b post pieces and cab corners. will take some work if you want to keep the original cab? good luck, i will be watching!
