One other interesting note...the Vortec headed "race motor" uses a .435/.460" camshaft...so my guess is a .460-ish lift cam is just fine on stock heads...

Sweet...I think I will hold out and get the ZZ383. It looks like it is the standard 383 with the HOT cam. I would guess in the neighborhood of $4400!! Available in Spring 03...that should be about perfect!!

does anybody know how much that zL1 is gonna weigh? when was the last time they made that motor?

GM partsdirect got the price
They use a different part # 12497317, but it's the same setup list on the pace website. I think the only difference is in the heads it looks like pace uses a fast burn, while gmpartsdirect uses the vortec heads. Here's there price anyways: $3,605.00

I would think they'll be more than a couple hundred bucks extra. The HT383 has an avg price around 3700$. The ZZ383 has the FastBurn aluminum heads which are around 800$ over the price of vortecs + it's got a single plane intake & bigger roller cam which typically only adds to the price. Remember, speed costs . . . how fast do you want to go?

Question on the zz4 motor, it has 10. something and the zz4 with the fastburn heads is 9. something With the lower compression heads on the fastburn is it capable of using a lower octance fuel even with the 385 hp vrs. the 355 for the reg. zz4. ?????? Thanks Ed is So. Calif.

I agree with SCOTI, the ZZ383 will be an expensive upgrade. It will be well over 4K I am sure!!

I heard somewhere(probably on this board) that those 'new' ZL-1's w/fuel injection were going for 20K +, but then again the ZZ430's were pricy weren't they?? I still like the 383 shortblock. Hydraulic roller cam, 1pc rear main seal, 4 bolt mains. Just add the right heads & cam/intake combo. As for worrying about loose tolerances on crate motors, how much worse can they be than a new car engine?

tolerances
as far as the tolerances being loose. I heard from an insider at gm that the assembly procedure is the same for production as crate engines except for some of the 502s and special engines
like the oval track engines and zz430s So I agree with Scoti that the tolerances are probably going to be within "production" spec. Also best route I have found for price/hp is the short blocks with aftermarket heads/cam and intake. ie the 385 f/b w zz430 upgrade is approx 4500 for just 300 more I can put together a package that will produce 450 hp and 470 ftlbs. not a lot of increase, but some times those light to light drag wars are won buy a little. also my way produces a lot better low end torque.
