700r4 shifts at 3000

Just got my truck back together and took it for a test drive. I got it to start going into fourth after a little monkeying and the part throttle shifts seem normal but at full throttle it shifts around 3000, isn't that a little low?
I figured it would shift around 4000, does anyone else have a 700r4 that shifts this low? Am I doing something wrong?

I set the TV cable according to the manual.

The trans is an '87 out of a camaro with a fresh rebuild, this was my first test drive.

thanks

Definately is too early to shift at wide open throttle. Check and make sure that tv cable is adjusted properly ie... tight enough.

the only way to get it perfect is to get a tv corrector kit so that you have the right geometry sonnax makes a good one

Re: 700r4 shifts at 3000

First thing I would do it floor the accelerator pedal and see if the TV cable is fully extended.

I mean, have someone floor it, with the engine off of course in your driveway, and tug on the TV cable and see if it still has travel.

If it does, you need to fix this by retracting the adjuster back in, floor the throttle again and let it adjust itself. You will know when you floor the pedal, the TV cable is fully extended and will not pull any more you are golden.

Hope that made sense, it's the middle of the night and I am tired. Dang work schedule.

Re: 700r4 shifts at 3000

I checked the TV cable this morning and it seems to be adjusted properly, the throttle had a little left in it when it was floored. I'm going to adjust it to get full rotation and try it again

I used a factory (GM) TV cable for a '85 chevy pickup

here are the brackets I used for my 4160

Re: 700r4 shifts at 3000

the throttle linkage now moves the throttle all the way. I took it out for testing and it shifts between 2900 and 3500 depending on the gear at WOT. The TV cable stays all the way in when I adjust it, Is my cable too long??

somebody help!!

Re: 700r4 shifts at 3000

I double checked the TV cable, It is all the way out at WOT.
Despite having a shift kit the shifts are not firm, less firm than my old th350.

Re: 700r4 shifts at 3000

what gear ratio does your truck have and what ratio was in the vehicle that the trans came out of? if the vehicle it came out of was a 2.73 or 3.08 and you put in a vehicle with 3.73 or 4.10 then the shift point is about right. What you will have to do is get a govenor recalibration kit from summit/jegs and recalibrate the govenor. This is very simple and takes about 20 minutes to do.

My truck has a 3.08 not sure about the camaro it came out of but my speedo is on (I checked it against my brothers truck) so I assume it was probably pretty close

you may want to pull the govenor out and check it to make sure it is operating properly. it is just a few weights and springs and doesn't take long to check. just sounds like a govenor issue to me.

Re: 700r4 shifts at 3000

rear gear ratio shouldn't have an effect on shift points..

I agree with checking the govener. But, if your saying it has soft shifts, I still feel the TV cable has something to do with it, it boosts pressure and firms up the shifts.

Auto Camaros had 3.23 gears if I recall right.

Its hard to tell how hard the shift is when it shifts at 3000 LOL, but it feels soft to me
