Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
drivers side rear
shocks are rancho RSX It broke the bolt once before and I put a good Grade 8 bolt in there and it broke the mounting tab as you see here. Could I have the wrong size shocks??? I do drive down a lot of rough roads

Re: Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
one of the ones on my burb were like that when i got it, so i replaced it with a new one and drilled the holes out slightly larger and installed the shock studs like on the top in the front

I agree with the comment about your shock being too long though.

Re: Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
I just replaced the driver's side mount on my '72. It was almost like that-- the hole was beat out pretty bad but not quite broken. The other side looked perfectly normal.
That bolt in the picture looks pretty small. I'm thinking mine took, like, 7/16-inch, or something pretty big.

Re: Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
Pretty sure that takes a 1/2 inch bolt, 3/4 inch wrench size. Either the bolt worked loose, was too small or both.

Re: Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
I would think your shock is to SHORT since it pulled up ...I would pull the shock all the way out and check it next to you hanger yo need to have a few inches down so the wheel has room to sag as well as compress..easy check..

Re: Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
Your probably right. But I'm thinking a loose or too small of a bolt may cause that also like someone mentioned.

Re: Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
AHAHA im sorry, but that just plain made me laugh.
I read "is this common, or am i just a bad driver?" and then the first picture i see it the picture with the shock hanging and the mount all torn out no words, the picture was self-explaining.. and I am trying to picture a "bad driver" doing something so outragous to bust it like that ..i dont know why I find this so funny, nobody else did... but I'm still laughing no offense, it was just the wording and picture combo

Re: Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
I vote for, among other things, that it was loose. That didn't happen with one shot. If you lay a hammer on a piece of metal and press as hard as you can...nothing happens. If you barely tap on it a few hundred times, you will ruin the metal.
Bottom line...if that shock mount was tight....the shock would fail WAY before the metal would!!!!! Make sense? It was loose. May have been to long or short, but that didn't cause that. It was loose! Last edited by prostreetC-10; 03-29-2009 at 07:51 PM. |

Re: Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
Only if you have dueling bangos playing in the back ground. I'd just get another shock mount and be done with it. All coil rear ends use the same one just get the correct side. Junkyard or eBay might be the best place. It's just too cheap a part to try and fix.

Re: Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
well id be replacing it if it was me, but if your deadset on fixing it, I'd grind it out until it was square then weld in a peice of steel the same thickness, and drill a new hole.

Re: Is this a common problem?? or am I a bad driver???
You're the worst driver I've ever seen!! J/K
Looks like you might get by with a washer for a fix.You want to make sure it is an extra thick one.I would look for replacement shock mount and new u-Bolts.
