350 / 6 cyl perches / 700r4 ?
I am getting ready to put a 350 / 700r4 in my 69 Suburban that has 6 cyl perches and a 3 spd saginaw now, I am looking for the easiest/cheapest way to get the MTR / TRAN in right now.
1) I have read that I need to shorten the driveshaft 3 inches? Can I move my 6 cyl perches to the forward holes and keep my driveshft the same length? I think that I will need to get a different splined yoke, is it as easy as grabbing one off of a 87 or 88+ model? 2) Would it be easier to use V-8 mounts off of another truck? Thanks for the help... |

Im not an expert yet, but I believe that the engine perches on the frame are the same, just need the mounts for V8, I have mine in the rear postion and it worked out ok. HEI Dizzy is a little close to the firewall though. I used a drive shaft out of a 80's Camaro and had it modified for the truck U-joint and length on mine. If it was a manual trans truck I think you need a new trans cross member as well. Hope this helps, and Im sure someone else will chime in.

It already had a 350/ 3 spd manual in it, I know I will have to remove the Manual trans. crossmember and get an auto crossmember (I will be building it though) What I was wondering was if I put it back in with the 6 cyl perches (in the 6 cyl holes closest to the firewall) will the 700r4 hit the low hump trans cover I have, and will moving it forward to the V8 holes three inches in front give me enough clearance for the transmission, and alow for the extra legth of the transmission at the same time ? If not I have the correct V8 Perches I can snag from my 1970 C30 if it will help the situation.....

I just measured, I am pretty sure that I will not have to shorten my driveshaft and it already has the right # of splines

If you move the 6 cylinder perches to the forward holes, you'll have to drill new holes for the bottom holes, or I did anyways. Works just the same as having v8 mounts.

I am pretty sure that that I am just going to slide them up three inches, and drill the hole. I am going over too where my one ton is to make for sure that I do not want to use those V8 stands. I did get the manual trans cross member out last night, it amazed me how tight of a fit it has...after I cut the heads off of the rivits, it still wanted to stay put!!

yeah that crossmember is a pain to get loose.
