Thumbs down don't you hate it when...

parts fall off your truck?
Yeah, it gets better too.
About a month ago, I went to bad67to72's place in Oz, which is closer to me than I had ever though, being in eastern Indiana. There was no big green floating head... but there WAS a green truck floating over the floor on jack stands. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=337249
So I finally got around to mounting the spinners on the suburban.
no... not SPINNAZ;

Spinners... simulated knock offs!;

They mount simple enough... drill a hole in the center cap... place the spinner in place, then run the 5/16th bolt (with thread locker) into the spinner and tighten down.
Well, anyone who has run these things, knows that you can't just tighten it down all tight and stuff, then you won't be able to get to all the lug nuts... they HAVE to be a bit loose.
Well, I guess one of them was just a tick too loose.
Rollin down the freeway the other day... hummin along 75 MPH or so, and someone pulls up beside me in a white Ford Explorer. Bit of a beater, but probably still worth more than just about anything I own. (not sayin much) I look over, and he is lookin at me. I just kinda wave. Way too many people wave at me around here when cruising around in the burb. Then he waves at me as he rolls down the window.
Even over the road noise, and wind noise, I hear his voice perfectly clear...
"You lost a spinner!"
He said this as he taps his windshield.
Oh crap... there's 2 cracks on his glass on the passenger side, one goes straight down, the other one goes down and to an angle.
I pull towards the side of the road, so i can give him insurance info... or trade numbers so i can get a glass guy to his place in the morning... you know, try to take care of the situation.
He waves, guns it, and takes off on an off ramp.
Cool... honestly, i didn't want to pay for his glass anyways... I would have... no questions asked. But, lets face it, I'd rather spend the money next week in puerto rico. I guess I'm selfish like that?
In all reality, it coulda been worse... if they were real knock offs and it came off, I guess my day would have been a LOT worse huh?

So I guess the moral of the story... check the spinners out, make sure they are tight.

Re: don't you hate it when...

lol! That's pretty funny. Maybe he already had a couple of cracks in his windshield before your spinner hit it, or maybe he was trying to get a free windshield, and chickened out. Either way, you tried to do the right thing. Have fun in Perto Rico and let us know what it's like over there.

Re: don't you hate it when...

Do the ones you have not have a set screw on the backside to help prevent them from coming off? Sets i have had in the past had them and you simple threaded the spinner on then locked them in place with the set screw (a small allen screw) and no lost spinner. If you don't have them you could add them pretty easily to keep from losing the others.

Wow he probally had glass coverage but it sounds like you got lucky in not sure how heavy those aer but hitting another car going down the freeway could have done some major damage

Poor fella...I know how excited you were to be putting them on, and I know how upset you were to lose one, since you sent me a text right after both happened...I'm glad there was no more damage than what was done, and no one got hurt...but...you have to admit. It's kinda funny...I'm just saying

I`m glad no serious injury or damage occurred.Coulda been a serious matter as easy as it wasn`t.
What kind of wave was it?Maybe he wanted to get off the freeway rather than sit on the shoulder?Either way,you got your "Get out of jail free" card.

Re: don't you hate it when...

did you loose one from the driver's side? if so you may want to consider some left hand bolts for that side.

Re: don't you hate it when...

Exactly what I was wondering, Did you go back and pick it up..?
I would not worry about his windshield if it happened here in florida as it is covered by his own insurance regardless if he only has pip insurance or just liability.

Re: don't you hate it when...

My dad and I were riding down the interstate in his somewhat new 85 Toyota 4x4 with matching blue bed cap. Somehow the clamps worked their way loose and we saw the cap go flying off the truck. We watched as it flew off into the grassed median and bent all to hell. My dad said to hell with it and kept going

And did you go back and get it X3?

He probably thought you were some crazy ol' Farm boy in the multicolored burb and didn't want to find out how big the gun rack was in the back. all those movie memories flashed before his eyes at once and he said to hell with it.

sorry you lost the spinner. I hate it when you realize you lost a part, I hate it worse when you see the part fly off and can't stop to get it.

I.E. I watched a headlight cover fly off and explode when the semi hit it.

Re: don't you hate it when...

As far as set screws, these don't have them... but they WILL have jamb nuts here soon.
It was the left rear... and as far as putting a left hand thread bolt in it... it's kinda hard when the threads inside of it are right handed. I guess i could do it, but I don't wanna have to turn the wrench that hard.
I never went back to get it. The freeway is about 5 lanes wide at that point, and I was in the middle lane. No tellin where it went.
Like RNG said, I shot a text out to a handfull of ppl, and Fine69 called tellin me he was headed through town and had some spinners I could have... he's cool like that. BTW... thanks mike! I don't care what the chicks say about you man... you ain't half bad!

Maybe knock-offs belong in the flex-fan category?
I know I don`t want that kind of liability.I`m just glad it wasn`t as bad as it could have been.

He probably stole that Explorer anyway.
