Questions about 69 k10 I am looking at
I went and looked at a 69 long bed 1/2 ton 4X4 today. The body was in fair to good condition, but it does have rust in the normal places (rockers etc.). What I like about the truck is that it is all original (except for an HEI distributor. It has the original radio etc.
It has a 350, 4 speed and the rockwell transfer case. I really wanted an NP205(had one in my Blazer and loved it). I am going to try to look at the transmission and confirm whether it is an SM420 or SM 465. Did they put the Rockwell behind the SM465? How hard is it to adapt an NP205 to the SM420 or SM465? The rig also has drum brakes. I am going to purchase a 72 GMC K20 for parts that has a 350, TH350, NP205,DANA 44, and DANA 60. Will the NP205 from the auto bolt up to thje SM465 or SM420? How hard would it be to swap the power brake equipment from the 72 to the 69? Sorry about the longwinded post, but I just don't want to make an uninformed decision. I am going to go look at the truck again and I will post further information. Maybe even pictures. |

I am swapping a SM465 in place of my 3 speed manual. I also have the Rockwell transfer case. The Rockwell was mated to a SM465 from the factory and also the SM420. To use the NP205 you will have to have an adapter other than the ones you have.
Unless the Rockwell was having problems, I wouldn't worry about swapping it out. They are just as sturdy as the NP205. Course if you have all the parts for the NP205, and it is all going to be torn apart, now is as good as time as ever to swap them. Not positive about the power brake question, but I bet it will be a straight forward swap.

The brakes should be a no brainer, Just change the master cylinder, proportioning valves and driveline parts in the front
