Sorry to hear about your loss, but what a truck to keep his memory alive!

Maybe it's just me, but that looks like a truck that's just itchin' to be taken on a road trip!!

Re: 1971 longhorn C20 custom camper another pic

This picture was taken during a HUGE road trip for this truck. When dad passed away I drove the truck from Idaho to New Mexico! It worked perfectly (the truck has only about 65,000 miles on it). The only issue was going over two or three mountain passes at 11,000 feet elevation, I began smelling gasoline. That was because there wasn't enough oxygen at that altitude to burn the gas. As soon as I came down, the smell went away. It took 2.5 days, across mtn passes, desert, high temps, and it worked very well. But dad took good care of it.

Since I've had it I had the rear drum brakes done (hard to find the parts for this job due to their big size, they came from Denver), the wheels repainted, the hubcaps restored by Hubcaps.com in Calif, (expensive but good job. 3 were chrome, 1 was stainless steel. The SS one was easy for them to undent, paint, polish. The chrome ones neede to be rechromed, but it was way expensive so i didn't have it done. Only undented, painted, and they look pretty good. So I'm on the look out for 3 SS hubcaps, they're hard to find!). New exhaust mianifolds (bad heat damage and cracked) and muffler.

It's fun to make it look and run well. A piece of history and a lot of good memories. Dad was the only owner and had a camper on it for years. We had a lot of great times out camping. I'm keeping it totally original as best i can.

It's fun to modify a truck, but when it's that nice, it can be just as challenging and rewarding to maintain it as close to original as possible. The great thing is that you can literally buy about 98% of the parts for these trucks online. I'll bet in another 50 years, my grandkids will be able to get parts for them...

Great road trip! I'd like to do that someday, but unless it's a hot rod cruise, I'll take some modern technology, conveniences and MPG!

Julie, you should post all those pics you sent me from that trip. I know I liked the one where it was parked in front of an old store, I think on a corner in the desert.

I like that truck. I will restore both of mine to stock...or as close as I can get it. Thanks for the pics and the hubcap company name.

Re: 1971 longhorn C20 custom camper another pic

Hey nice truck, I just saw a custom camper for sale a few minutes ago and it seemed like a nice truck. I have a couple 67-72s but I haven't seen too many of the custom campers. I am new to this website and a little bit computer illeterate so I'm not sure what I'm doing. Can anyone tell me how rare these trucks are and what are our thoughts on them.
