Motor combo
I thought I'd share with you the specs for a motor that I am putting together for my brother for his 77 Blazer. Just ordered most of the parts up today. We ran it through the desktop dyno and got some very impressive numbers that I thought would be well suited to a heavy vehicle with gearing in the 3.31-4.10 range ...such as in our trucks.
Heres the highlights 350 - 4 bolt main block .030" over Flattop forged TRW pistons 4340 H Beam Scat rods New Scat crank Top Proline 200 CC heads Competition cams 270S solid lifter cam ARP rocker studs with positive locs 1.6 ratio roller rockers Edelbrock Torker intake 750 Vacuum secondary Holley HEI He's not going to have more than $2500 in this motor by the time its all together.This will be a completely streetable motor on pump gas with a bit over 10:1 compression . The solid lifter cam has an advertised duration of 270 degrees and a lift with the 1.6 rockers at just under half an inch. It should develop vacuum in the 15-17 in. range which is fine for power brakes and a decent if slightly rough idle.The slight overlap will also help avoid detonation on 92 octane. This motor looks like a good combo for a truck. With the roller rockers, ARP rocker studs and locks we shouldnt have to touch the lash settings more than every 10,000 miles. Whats the bottom line according to the desktop dyno? How about 465 horsepower at 6000 rpm and a peak torque of 456 ft lbs at 4500 rpm. Thats impessive enough but the real kicker is that the torque numbers dont drop under 400 ft lbs from 2500 RPM to 6500 rpm. Thats excellent power out of a pump gas 350 small block! Its those heads. I ran the heads I have on my 350 through the program with exactly the same short block and lost 50 HP and 30 ft lbs and my heads are good to begin with. The Vortec heads didnt fare much better. I'm going to have to get myself a set of those. At $750 a set fully assembled its hard to beat.

look at the comp xs-274s10 grind...it will give better numbers than the 270s..it has newer technology....give it a look

Thanks for the heads up. I went over to their website and did a search. Seems they have a whole new lineup of solid lifter cams. Thats odd these days. Everyone seems to be going overboard on hydraulics and hydraulic rollers. I remember when competition cams was the upstart cam company. Now their kicking everyones ass with new ideas and good variations on the old. I'll run some numbers and probably change the order I placed today. I like the really tight lash they are running on their newest cams at .016" .

Looks like I'll be making some calls tomorrow. either the xs268 with the flatops ...
or switching pistons to 11:1 slugs and going with the xs274s . That would be a badass combo! The extra overlap would bleed off enough so it would still run on 92 octane pump gas ( albeit with a mileage hit ) but he'd be looking at 487 HP at 6500rpm and 462 ft lbs at 4500rpm again with a really broad torque curve. Looks like those heads and that cam were made for each other. I'm looking at VE numbers of over 96% ! Thats awesome for a out of the box set of heads and an off the shelf cam.

yup...I pulled the top end off my engine today...getting the heads worked on and installing the xs274....Ive had the cam for a month..but have been to busy to put it in...
