leaking water between trans and engine
There must be freeze plugs behind the flywheel. Thats where my 72 gmc 350 is leaking anyway. Tell me they didn't put freeze plugs here. If they diD transmission has to be removed I' M thanks. THANKS terry

Re: leaking water between trans and engine
More than likely it but also remember that water follows the path of least resistence so it could be a bad intake gasket because the water jackets are in the front and rear. A head gasket can also leak without being blown and run just fine. I have had both of these. Pull the inspection plate off the trans and see if you can shine a light up in there and see the problem. Can easily be the soft plug but why not do a process of elimination first before pulling the trans.

Re: leaking water between trans and engine
It is possible to use a rubber freeze plug cap to see if its a head gasket. you wouldnt have to pull the transmission although it would be much easier. you could simply remove the suspected leaking plug and add the rubber one, cinch it down at get it up to operating temp, if your not leaking anymore that was your problem... only thing about that is i wouldn't run the rubber ones for very long if at all.

Re: leaking water between trans and engine
I did remove the flywheel cover and can see water on drivers side trickling down behind the block. I cannot actually see the freeze plug itself. Not sure how to get it out and install a rubber plug without trans, out.

Re: leaking water between trans and engine
more than likely a freeze plug. You have to get the trans out of the way, and most parts stores will sell 1 5/8 brass freeze plugs. Replace both of them for obvious reasons. I will take a large screw driver and hammer and smack the edge of the old freeze plug and try and cock it side ways so I can get hold of it with a set of vise grips to pry it out of the hole. A little bit of 2B permatex around the new freeze plug, a socket about the size of the freeze plug and an extension for a driver. Take about 30 minutes to install the freeze plugs, takes about 3 hours to R & R the tranny. IF it is an automatic

Re: leaking water between trans and engine
I agree with the black permatex. I learned the hard way by installing them dry. I also like to run my finger along the wall to make sure there are no burrs. Make sure and just tap in flush or just a smidge more. Make sure though that the socket fit inside the plug so the walls suck in when you tap it in (if that makes sense). You don't want to socket big enough for the lip of the plug.

Re: leaking water between trans and engine
are you running water or water antifreze mix? if you are running pure water, you might as well pull the engine and replace ALL the freze plugs.

More than likely not. You are right...you just need to keep an eye on it.

Re: leaking water between trans and engine
With the hot and cold contraction a freeze plug will start leaking a little at a time. When you pull the trans make sure you replace all the freeze plugs, path of least resistance/oldest/weakest plug will be next to leak. It sucks to ruin a motor over a .50 cent plug....lol
