i gotta get stress out..

so i have my driver side header on thats it no exhaust on that side.. passenger side is manifold into flowmaster.. havent converted that side yet.. so i was revving it today to listen to it.. sounds decent with open headers.. my neighbor two houses down is like 60 or so.. shes walkin so fast that i can tell she was mad at me.. so im just lookin down into my engine from the cab since i got no windshield in.. and my mom is outside and they were talkin she was complaining to her how my truck is too loud.. how the neighbors have been talkin and they think it needs to stop and they are sick and tired of me workin on my truck and making noise.. that she threatened to call the cops on me.. blah blah blah... and so what would u all do in this situation?? i just cant wait to get passenger side header on haha!! it should be interesting

Re: i gotta get stress out..

Depends on the time of day. If it's normal daylight hours, then you have as much right to work on your engine as anyone with a mower, weed whacker, pressure washer, leaf blower etc.... I suppose it might depend on local ordinances or something, but as a general rule, you have the right to work on your vehicle on your property.

Re: i gotta get stress out..

Considering its your folks house I think I would try to keep the noise down as much as possible. They are the one catching the flak from the neighbors.

We all love the sound of uncorked headers. Just try to be conscientious of those who don't.

When my oldest son was younger...late teens...he had one of those crazy loud stereos in his car. He would crank that thing up and Id have to get on him to turn it down. His response was if the neighbors didnt like it too bad...they can close their doors. Course even if you did the bass would still be thumping through their walls.

He's 28 now, nice wife, four year old daughter and recently moved into their first new home. We were all sitting in the front yard and the neighbor kid had his stereo cranked up very loud. My son was saying...that damn kid drives me nuts cranking his stereo up like that. You can hear it all over the whole neighborhood. I just started cracking up...what goes around eventually comes around.

CG, Great Story! My son is 24 and away at college but I remember the days when he was working on his truck and cranking the music. I always told him to keep the noise down. He's getting married next year and one day he'll have kids. I'm curious to see how he'll react to the neighbor kid(s) working on their rides outside.

Its nice to not live in town. The last time I fired up my 'Cuda with open headers, one of my neighbors came over and complimented me on how good it sounded, lol.

I live in Arkansas and have been told (by the neighborhood noise police) that there are regulations on work hours like 6-6 or something (don't know it's a fact). Even though it's daylight at 5:30 am and I'm pretty well awake, I wouldn't want the neighbors to have a roofing crew out there at that time so I guess someone else might work 2nd or 3rd shift and need to sleep at other times.

I've had to constantly remind my oldest about his stereo just like I had to be told when I was a teenager. Of course it is fun when Dad gets out at dawn and racks off the pipes after a night of the campsite neighbors being drunk and loud.

Like has been said, what goes around, comes around around.

Re: i gotta get stress out..

If you still gotta hang the exhaust, just slap on a cheap set of manual cut outs, you can have your open headers at the track and the neighbors won't call the cops on you. Cutouts would probably be cheaper than the ticket, and everybody wins.

Re: i gotta get stress out..

It does not matter what time of day it is, disturbing the peace is illegal (open headers would qualify for that), even in your parent's drive...around here a cop will ticket you for that anywhere. I understand that some people feel entitled to do what they wan't in their house, but if it is illegal it is illegal...fire up some dope in the front yard, or smack your girlfriend, you still go to jail. I have found that an honest appology and a promise that you will get it fixed will go along way with keeping the peace in a neighborhood. We did some silly stuff when I was young, We just always made sure to at least try not to impead on others right's in the process...

OK, I will admit that open headers are probably a bit much when it comes to working on your truck around the house. I would also agree that the cutouts are a very good idea.

Re: i gotta get stress out..

I was no angel while livin at the parents house with my V8 toys either, but it is very disrespectfull to the neighbors. I chilled out one day when one of them who was a big ol' retired US Marine, he barked at me in a way that puts chills down your back while I was breakin in a cam with no muffs. Ever since then I was more aware that I was working in the back yard of a house, not in some industrial park garage bay with rail road tracks next door.

I'm older now, and a home owner on a nice quiet block. When I fire up the Harley, I baby it out of the hood. I will even give a heads up to my closest neighbor, that I am takin off early in the morning for a road trip since his bedroom window is right next to my garage. It's all good, and him and his wife don't give the stink eye at me later on.

Right now you are getting a kick out of it, which is to be expected given your situation. But, karma has a way of slappin you in the head later in life. So if I were you I'd chill out while you are ahead

Tim, just so you know bud, open headers Will get you pulled over and ticketed in Kansas. That's why I ran cut outs when I was your age. The manual ones like I had weren't that hard to use, and you could shut them when you didn't want the extra attention.

Tim, I was also going to ask if you were still going to attend McPherson college this coming year? I just took a class at the start of June for Metal Restoration. There are some really nice instructors there.

You sound like my buddys neighbor....you would be surprised how quiet the truck was after he pinched all the gas lines with Vice grips in about ten places, he was one that really never believed in calling the Police for things he could handle himself. I miss that guy,..LOL
