Exterior Door Handle Removal

How do you remove the outside door handle?

I'm clear on the two screws but I don't see how the actuating rod comes off the handle. I'm even more concerned about getting it back on there afterwards....

Thanks -

K

Re: Exterior Door Handle Removal

It is a simple "rotating" clip that hold the rod to the handle. There are 2 little metal tabs that wrap around the rod. You just lift/pry them away from the rod and the entire clip roates around the bend on the end of the rod.

Re: Exterior Door Handle Removal

what year are we talking about, cause the 77-up doors I just tore apart have what looks like a large nail head on the end that mates up to the handle

edit for some pics......

maybe I'm wrong, but the only way I see is to pull the rod loose from the latch, then you can remove the rod from the handle.

I was trying to figure this out earlier and found this thread. FWIW, the rod is captured to the door handle like they said w/the "nail head" but there is a tension clip on it to keep it from rattling. Don't try to take that off, it comes out with the handle. The lower end of the rod has to be removed from the latch by pulling down on the clip that holds it. Pictures for reference.

Re: Exterior Door Handle Removal

It made it easier for me too loosen the door latch as much as possible or take it totally loose. I have big hands and the handle latch is right by the door shell so I can't get in to it with the latch tightened up.

Re: Exterior Door Handle Removal

Mine is like yours, Joe (with the "nail" type end). The truck in question is an '87.

I actually did what I needed without pulling the handle all the way off but thought I would still ask because I was curious.

Thanks -

Re: Exterior Door Handle Removal

Yeah, wrong thing in my head. There are so many different clip styles in so many different vehicles. It's hard to keep them straight. The metal one I was refering to looks very similar to the plastic clip the holds the rod to the latch in one of those pictures. A lot of them had the "sliding" clip that wrapped around a rectangular tab.
