Another fender dillema...
well, i went and picked up a new 67 fender on saturday (along with a hood, driver fender, and grille - in which i dont need so i guess ill be selling). well, i already knew it needed a front cup, no big deal. when i go to take off the chrome trim, i find rust along the arch. well, no im wondering if i should just make 1 out of 2? my original fender i have, is perfect except the huge dent and rust in the fender cup. what i was thinking was cutting the fender right before the dent, all the way off, and cutting off the same portion on the new fender i got, and welding it all back together. now, i still would have to get a new front lower cup, but at least i get to save my good original fender. if i use the new one, i would have to replace the cup, and the wheel arch. just wanted to get some opinions...heres some pics!

My question is... How did you get the bird to poop right where you wanted to cut?
No really you could do what you are saying. I would make the cuts, after measuring about a million times. Tack them together, bolt the fender to truck. And align. Then weld in small beads to prevent warping. IMO

lol little bastard knew what was thinkin I guess. my other option was to use the new one, but I would have to find a cup and the wheel arch. imo it seems easier to cut half of it off and weld the other one on

well i cut em up and bolted them up to the truck, in seperate pieces and something isnt lining up here. anyone know how i can fix this? it seems like i have to cut a little more and it would bring the bottom up? i guess i was a little off when measuring. let me know what you guys think i should do, thanks.

Could you just look for another fender thats not in that bad of shape. I'm sure you could pick one up from a board member. Thats a lot of work and a lot that could give you problems. And why risk the headache just my 02.

I am just wondering, and admire you for trying to fix what you got..but, you are in Texas, Don't they have rust free parts in every other back yard there? I live in the rust belt and would not even dream of fixing a fender like that, If it is just for the chalenge then cool, and good luck.

well most of the work is done. just have to line it up right and weld it. and this is my second fender, don't really plan on lookin for another. and a 67-68 fender isn't really easy to find around here without driving hours away. this truck is a project, so I got time

Good`67 fenders are a bit tough to find.I admire the go ahead and do it when it comes to fix over replace.Screw cost effective.The world runs on it,it makes sense on paper,but we toss too much stuff and where`s the soul in it?I say right on brother.

While I have replaced a few cups with great success I would not attempt cutting them down the middle. If I were to try this I would make sure the top and inner part lines up right then work my way down. You may need to make some relief cuts to massage the lower portion into matching shape.
If I had to choose between the two methods of repair I would replace the cup and the rusted opening lip if the rest of the fender was nice enough. IMO We can all agree the factory metal is better, even being 40 years old, than the newer parts so I commend you on trying to save yours.

I think that fender had some rust issues in the back bottom corner too. mine is much more solid...just that dent damn near killed it lol. good thing I kept it , I almost threw it away before fully inspecting the new one. well I got surgery done today on the 2 pieces, I think its coming out pretty decent. ill post some pics when im done for the day, I still gotta mow the grass!

yes, and those are even harder to find than chevy fenders. theres pretty much no going back now, if it fails - oh well. ill find another, if i have to. just one day down the drain, no real material lost, no $$ down the drain, just time. im waiting on the cup anyways, so theres not much else to do.

wow, i forgot about this thread. i guess i can update it since im about finished with it. i put it off for a little bit to take off the core support, fix some rust, get it to metal then sprayed some black satin on it, and put it all back together. after that i went back at it with the fender.
this is after the sectioning before the cup replacement.. [IMG][/IMG] this is after the cup replacement, which fit like crap [IMG][/IMG] this is after some body work, and then i sprayed some satin black to get an idea what it looks like(bad move since this stuff wipes off when i cleaned it with wax and grease remove, so it smeared everywhere) [IMG][/IMG] sanded it back off, and tried some more body work..pics as of tonight [IMG][/IMG] its a little tough getting it straight right where the fender curves into the arch, by far my biggest problem. im just going to get it pretty decent then let the body guy perfect it when it gets painted, which is gonna be a loooooong time from now. lol. well, i guess ill post up the pics of it in primer which should be by the weekend. what you guys think?

I thought I was the only idiot that would do something like this !!!! the driver's side front fender on my 67 camaro was made out of two GM fender's in 02 it still look's good ,, good job !

and here it is in black primer...it didnt turn out near as perfect as i want, but its good enough to put on and ride on for a while. i guess i can let the paint guy fix it to perfection when it gets painted. i learned a lot working on this fender so i see it as lessons learned.. i dont know why but you can see the filler under the primer. once everything is bolted back on, im going to do a very light 400 grit wet sand over the whole front end and spray one more coat of primer.

I think you did an awesome job on making one out of two. As an aside, I have a buddy who built a Model A out of not much more than you used to piece the fender together. For those of you who are blessed with that kind of talent, there will always be those like me who are awe-struck with your work. Congratulations!

You got talent there,man. Looks good. I like it when you can bring original factory metal back to usable form. I think too many toss in the towel early and just go out and buy "new" crappy fitting over seas junk rather than reusing original metal. Good luck with the rest of your truck.

thanks for the compliments guys, i did run into one more rust problem i had to cut out and fix but no big deal. i got everything back together but i was wondering if you guys could help me out a bit. for some reason my hood lines up pretty good in the front but doesnt going towards the cowl. like something is holding it up in the middle but there is nothing at all underneath that would be holding it up. can anyone tell me where i need to adjust the hood to get it to sit flush? something im not doing right here....lol

loosen all the hinge bolts on the fender, lift the hood all the way up and tighten the bolts up, it will suck the back down
