TH400 Fluid Capacity?
Hi -
I'm changing the tranny fluid and filter in my 72 GMC C2500 (TH400). I read in my owner's manual that I need to put 7.5 pints (about 3 3/4 quarts) of oil back in, but that didn't seem like enough when I read it, and it's not enough. That much doesn't even register on the dip stick and of course, the tranny won't shift. Does anyone know how much oil should be put back in without overfilling it? Thanks, Scott |

Re: TH400 Fluid Capacity?
I cannot remember how much they take but I am sure its more than that, take it to 5 qt and add 1/2 quart at a time til it reads on the stick. Lot of trouble but at least you wont over fill. maybe someone else will pop in with the correct amount.

Re: TH400 Fluid Capacity?
Thanks for the input. I'll just keep adding until it registers.

Re: TH400 Fluid Capacity?
not 11 quarts. that is for a new trans.
just go 1/2 bottle at a time. Don't overfill it. Get the fluid on the add line, then drive it around the block a few times and check it. The full line is full hot, not full cold. Over that line and it is worse for tranny life than being too low. |

Re: TH400 Fluid Capacity?
I used 4 to 5 quarts to fill after draining just the pan.
