alternator bracket on a 350
Were there different length brackets used? I have one on the 72 truck I purchased that is broke on the end. I am going to weld it up I guess but I decided to try the bracket off the 71 truck and its about 2 inches longer and a different bend so I cannot get enough adjustment out of the bracket.
did they change them often? why? |

Re: alternator bracket on a 350
Yes there are diferent lengths. There are the 67-68 small block brackets that mount on the exhaust manifold. Then there is the 69-71 which mounts to the head. Finally there is the 72. Same mount on the head as 69-71 but longer curved arm. The 72 arm is hard to find used in good condition and I havent seen any repoped in awhile. The reason for the change was they changed the alternator design. The 72 alternator looks like the 73- up gm alternator, same case for the most part, but it still is external regulated. The 68-71 alternator is a diferent design in the area of the case.
I have two 72's and one had came with the 72 arm and they cut the end off for some reason. I went and got another arm but it was the 69-71 design and wouldnt work. So I planed on cutting the end off the 69-71 arm and welding it to the cut 72 arm. But it never happened. I just stole the arm off of my other 72, which was and is out of service, and am now planning sepentine setups for both. Hope this helps. |

Re: alternator bracket on a 350
If welding it up does not work out, you can buy one of the chrome aftermarket ones at Autozone, Kragens, etc. in the "bling" section. All you have to do is cut it down a little bit, and drill a new mounting hole.

Re: alternator bracket on a 350
There isn't anything wrong with the mounting hole....but when you cut the bracket down, you throw out the piece that has the hole in it...so you need to drill a new one that's all.
