Officially Burnt out!!

Well the time has come for me to be done with the 67, it was a great war but i believe she won. After putting in the new motor, and months of work, she fired up and ran great for 2 days, Then BANG she blew??? So thanks to all that helped me out and ill be back when i decide to fight again.

Re: Officially Burnt out!!

Don't give up. Just step back and take a break and then come back to it when you've cleared your head and rested up. Might be a simple fix. It's not uncommon to fix one thing and have another blow out. You just have to keep on keepin on.

Re: Officially Burnt out!!

i went through that, did an engine swap, made my own conversion for installing a caddy motor, running like a raped ape, cruised all over town on sunday (first day on the road) then monday morning on the way to work the brake booster blew, instnatly went REAL lean on once cylinder and shattered that one piston.
I ain't gonna lie, I almost cried that day.
Step back, take a break, then jump back in the fight.

The great thing about mechanical toys (unlike pets) is that you can stuff them in the back of the garage, walk away, and come back later...

I think this happens with most of us in this hobby.

Yeah, that's my worst fear right now. I bought an LS 6.0 for my 72 Chevelle form a guy. Not yet installed. Will install it this winter. I'm hoping and praying I didn't spend all this money flashing the ECU, changing the oil pan and updating the wiring harness only to get it in there and......KABOOM!!

Re: Officially Burnt out!!

I tell ya, I have been there as well in the past. The best thing to do is just like everyone else is sayin, just park it out of the way n' go inside and have a beer or two or three.

There will be a weekend, where it will call you back and you will be happy again to tinker with it.

Hang in there!

Re: Officially Burnt out!!

The first motor I rebuilt was a Honda 350
I was 16 years old and spent most of the winter and all my money on it.
Spring came and she fired right up!
Yay! Peel out of the drive, go down the road and BLAM!
Forgot to put thread locker on the cam chain sprocket bolts.
Pistons hit the valves and ruined the head I had machined myself in shop class.
WAAH!
I parked it and a few weeks later tore into it again.
Give it time.....It will call you back.

Re: Officially Burnt out!!

Sometimes is ceaper to let someone else build it for you and in most cases actually cheaper. Don't give up put a cover on it and forget about it. This is nothing new these damn buckets sometimes are just a painin the culo.

Re: Officially Burnt out!!

That sucks! And I know exactly how you feel.
Not to hijack this thread but here is a similar story. I have a beautiful 1969 Firebird. Took me 4 years to do this car, she was stripped down to a bare shell and built up again.

She has a monster Pontiac 462 and after 5000 miles the cam is wiped! That just happened in May. I knew what was wrong but was so disgusted I just put her away in the garage. Just recently came back to her and the engine is out of the car now and being rebuilt.

This time with a HR cam and lifters. No more screwing around with flat tappet lifters! This is costing me a ton, but damm it, I am in so deep now there is no turning back. I am stoked thinking about what it will be now. An even better motor that will produce 575 HP and at the minimum 550 lb ft of torque. Makes me smile just thinking about it.
So just relax, take a deep breath. In a short time you will be back at it.....

Re: Officially Burnt out!!

Blood, sweat, and tears. Sounds like you were building something you would be proud of. Like everyone else has said, these projects can be a real pain in the bazooka, go fishing for a bit then pull that motor out and start the doo-over process. I'd like to see some pictures of what you have, and hear what you have planned for your truck.

Life can slap you in the face at times, just remember to slap the crap out of it when you leave the 60 foot burn out marks when it is running again!

If I gave up on my truck everytime I said I was done with her, well, I'd have been done with it a long time ago. Stick with it.

Re: Officially Burnt out!!

Sounds like somebody might have left the bolt in the front of the block after they installed the fuel pump. Check to make sure theres a short bolt and not a long bolt in where the rod retainer bolt is. PS,put thread seal on after checking. That things a pretty solid shaft of metal, never heard of anyone bending or breaking one until now.
