Chevy Or GMC- What do I own?

Does anyone out there know how to break down the VIN? I own a junkyard-built '68 Chevy/GMC, it has Chevy badging on it now. It has a 12 bolt rear end, rear leaf, both rear shocks point toward the front of the truck. It originally was a 6 cylinder, 3 on the tree. There is no build sticker, just a VIN on the door post. VIN is CS10C PB27587, underneath that 'DD'.
VIN plate says 'GMC Truck Max GVW 5000'. Under that is a plate that says "General Motors Corp certifies this truck to meet all safety requirements". Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.... it's been bugging me for a long time not knowing. Do you know if all stepsides were rear leaf springs? Anyone I have asked about it is surprised it has leafs in it.

If you didn't already know, the front clip is not a 68. It is a 69-72 with a 69-70 grille.

I knew it wasn't the right one for the truck, and thought it was newer. Like I mentioned, it was built in a wrecking yard, so whatever was around was used. Thanks for the help, and clearing up about the grille.

On 2wd pickups you could have leafs or coils. It made no difference what bed was on it.

Re: Chevy Or GMC- What do I own?

I saw pictures of another 68 stepside on here earlier, and both shocks pointed forward same as mine. I assume this is stock. I have a lot of wheelhop issues with mine, any suggestions? Was this normal for these trucks?

Re: Chevy Or GMC- What do I own?

IIRC GMCs had a tenancy to be leaf rears due to their "work truck" image at that time, more so than Chevys at least. Like others have said though, any half ton 2wd could possibly have rear leaves, but the majority had coils.

ALSO, I think we have established that yours is a 68 by way of the VIN, but another tell tale sign to distinguish between these years is in the cab interior. A 69 would have a foot operated E-Brake (started on the 69 year model) but a 68 would have a hand operated version.
