69-70 With saddle bags?

I don't have the pic on me. But next to the garage I rent out a guy has a truck that looks like its a long box step side with saddle bag type metal compartments in between the tires and the cab. Steel floor too. Were these very common back in the day?

Re: 69-70 With saddle bags?

This is actually a toolbox area, and while they were installed on several trucks, they were in limited quantity. I've seen the rust free doors go for $150.

Nate, he said it was a long bed stepside, it is not the toolbox I believe you are talking about on a fleetside long box. AJLCHASE, you should take a pic next time you are near. I don't believe I have seen any long step sides with a utility side compartment. They might be aftermarket created. Trevor

Re: 69-70 With saddle bags?

It was a C/20 350. Had a big ole stick shift in it. The bed was a flat steel not a ribbed/rippled one like most. Where the steps were on both sides of the bed was a lock box on each side that looked welded into place. It's pretty neat. The guy who I talked to next door said it was always sitting there and it might be for sale. I did with out asking pop the hood and there looks to be a fair bit of bondo type wrapping along the fire wall.

Re: 69-70 With saddle bags?

AJLCHASE, I believe you are referring to a utility box instead of a normal bed? One that construction crews typically use? Trevor

It looked just like this truck, but where the step is there was a box on each side of it that locked and it was fully made of metal. If it was after market it looks like it would be a good pass for stock.

Re: 69-70 With saddle bags?

I`ve seen people mount boxes that fit between the cab and the fender over the step. It`s an addition made by owners.

I'm with special-K.I've seen them that fitted well and some not so well. Most that I have actually noticed were on 3/4 tons with camper.Lots of people put their assorted camping equipment there.

Number one, I'm pretty darn sure that GM never made a short or longbed stepside with a steel floor. That guy probably covered or replaced the old, shot wood floor with a steel sheet. From what I understand your saying about the step mounted tool box(es) I'm also pretty sure that was something that was added after the truck was built. I'm no historical expert but I do own a longbed stepside.

Something similiar yes. I will be heading to the garage tomorrow after work I'll stop by and take a pic of the truck with my cell phone and then post it tomorrow night. It probably is an aftermarket add on but, I think it kind of stands out and too it probably has a self made steel floor to it. It just looks different

Re: 69-70 With saddle bags?

My Uncle Richard had a 71 or 72 lwb step with utility boxes bolted in place of the stepside fenders. I wish I had some good pictures of it.

Re: 69-70 With saddle bags?

IMO... I bet it's an aftermarket add on, but it definitely adds more storage space.

Thanks for grabbing the pics!
