hood stiffener foam pads,replacing?

tried a while back to post this subject but not many people knew how. tryin' to find a easy way of replacing the old crusty foam inserts on bottom-side of your hood.obvious way seems to be using a flat plastic or rubber somethin or udder to keep from scratchin the paint .anyone tackled this problem w/ decent results, you might like to share? later.

guess i should have been more clearer in 1st. post. i have the new replacement foam pads/strips just need a tip on removing old and installing new.

i cant remember mine being in there. they arent loose? could you cut them out, or maybe use a scraper???

the foam pads/strips are wedged in between the inside of your hood and the long frt. to back rails that provide strength to the hood.strips go on the long frt. to back rails, pads go on the core support and the fire-wall ends. if your's aren't in there you prolly have a shaking or rattling hood.......that's kinda the point!!lol!!

Gotta use some ingenuity there, that being some kinda hook instrument to painstakingly yank the old crap out. And then maybe a metal spatula to get the rest off thats sticking to the metal. If the hood is loose then it should be relatively easy to dig out...right?

If the old is missing, try this. Use weatherstrip adhesive on the new pieces. Carefully slip some wax paper between the hood and support. Wedge the hood up slightly with something wide and soft. Paint stick with paper towel around it. Keep the wax paper against the hood. Brush in a little adhesive on the support.
This will work like laying formica. Once the two pieces have dried tacky, lay more wax paper over the support. Slide the foam into position and slowly slide the wax paper off of the support allowing the foam to make contact only where you want it. Once stuck, pull the wedges and remove the top wax paper.

You could also wedge the hood so that you could slide an object to clean off the old foam if any is remaining. Probably no more than 3/8 gap going carefully.

I think I have seen my hood bounce more than that though.

not a bad idea of using wax paper to put new pieces in.the old stuff had been painted the same under hood color as the rest of the truck,so needless to say the old dried out and cracked stripping needs replaced.thanks for the ideas guy's!

I got most of mine out by using a propane torch to heat a wooden handle kitchen knife. I used the hot knife as a scraper to melt through and scrape the rubber out.

yeah, but was this on a hood that had already been painted ,and you didn't want to ruin the paint job? think i'll take one of momma's plastic/rubber spatula's and try to ease it out.maybe soaking the foam pieces in a dish water type detergent will help them slide in easier.thanks again!

We had some body owrk done on Sub several yrs ago. Guy was painting some of the jambs in prep for final paint (we later bailed on him and I haven't got in finished yet) Anyway the guy cleaned out old foam and looks to have used JB Weld type stuff in there for permanent fix. I have driven truck 1500 miles since and seems to look great and function well. I wonder why they used foam? I might clean it up a little and smooth out edges with more soemday and paint underside of hood a better mathcing blue. Maybe I can get pics in a couple of days. Email me to remind me!!

yeah, use something to glue them in, mine keeps falling out. today i was backing my pcikup in the garage and all of a sudden it was the smelliest rubber burning fire smell ever. the stupid thing fell out half way and was hanging down on my rams horns. im gonna need to get some glue good luck, Ben
