Radiator Support Install ???

Hopefully someone can help me out. I got my new radiator support install kit today and went to work to install it. I bought this truck in pieces so I am unsure how some things go back together. Is this bushing supposed fit down into the frame? The bushing seems to be a little to big to fit. Is this normal or did I get some poor quality parts. I bought this kit from The Truck and Car Shop. Thanks for any help.

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

you should have more parts..... you should have two rubber pieces (one with a steel sleeve) one long bolt a self locking nut and a offset washer and a large flat washer. bolt and offset washer go through the core support the hard rubber piece with the sleeve insert goes between the core support and the frame with the sleeve pointing down through the hole in the frame then under the frame mount you put the other rubber washer then the large flat washer then finally the nut... might be able to get a picture of mine for you tomarrow.

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

Sorry, I did not take pic of everything. I have all that stuff, I was just concerned that this particular part did not seem to fit like I think it should. Should it sit down flush with the frame? Should there be the gap where the arrow is?

looks a little different than mine did... could just be a manufacturer thing... looks like it might have a recesed ring cut into it?

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

Its suppose to fit down into the frame for sure....You got me thinking though about mine....Because mine are way smaller than the mounting hole...so there is a lot of slop??...but mine is a 4x4...??

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

You must be working on a 67-68 frame right ? If so you have the wrong mounting kit. Your kit is for 69-72. Even if you would get that to fit the radiator support will sit too high and you will not be able to put the bumper on or line the fenders up right.

67-68 used a much thinner rubber piece with a bolt and some thick washers to hold the support, the frame mount is riveted higher on the frame and has a smaller hole.

69-72 used a thicker rubber bushing like you have. The frame mount is riveted lower on the frame horn and had a larger hole in it.

Brothers has the right part for you -

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

I just put mine on I think that the LMC catalog has an exploded view that shows the prpoer order.

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

With the help of this board, I have determined that I am in fact dealing with a 67 frame, which apparently makes a difference. So, back to the catalog to order up the correct hardware. One question though, according to the LMC page posted above, they offer one hardware set for all year models, that is not correct is it?

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

Yes - you will find that LMC and a few other less informed vendors think the rad support mounts are all the same, but they are not. Cab mounts are the same. There are several minor differences between the years, but thats is why we are here. Someone likely has been there before. I ran into that same problem when doing our 1968. Brothers has the parts you need in the link I gave earlier, other vendors should have them too.

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

Thanks again for the assistance. It sets me back a bit, but at least I now know what year my frame is. This should solve any future probs.(it should but it won't)

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

Bringing back a dead post but I have a 64 C10. Green Machine, would the radiator kit you listed work for it? You mention that 67/68 are different than a 69-72. When I click on your link to the brothers hardware it lists it as a 60-68. But aren't the 60-66 different than the others?

PS> I was brought here by someones build thread.

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

it might work as the frame width is the same but i have no idea about the mounts. youd be best off getting the part # of the kit you wanna use and vendor name and asking on the 60-66 site.

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

Dead post revival...

Bigdogboxers said "hard rubber piece with the sleeve insert goes between the core support and the frame "

See blowup from LMC.. They are showing everything besides the bolt and offset washer to be below the frame mount...

Which is correct for a 1971?

Thanks!

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

I'm posting this because the LMC breakdown, i have a K20, here's a pic of the driverside rad support mount, the LMC page would lead you to believe that the mount go's under the angle plate but it sits on top.

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

Thanks swamp rat..

The K20 and C10 both mount this way?

Help me get this straight..

You'll have the bolt and offset washer, then the radiator support, the hard rubber bushing with the insert pointed down through the frame support, the frame support, the trapezoidal rubber bushing (long side up), then the washer and nut ?

Just like the attached picture?

Many thanks!

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

I think you have it correct, but i do know that different trucks use different mounts, if your mount doesn't fit in the frame hole i'd probably call the place you got them from and make sure you have the correct ones, it may help to have a hole measurement and the bushing measurement.

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

It looks like the radiator support was originally sitting on the frame (the PO had painted the frame and it's bare/rusty right under the radiator support. This leads me to believe that it was sitting on the frame. If I install the hard rubber bushing under the radiator support, it will be off of the frame by about an inch...

Can anyone post a photo of a 71 showing the correct mounting setup?

Many thanks~!

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

This pic is from the '68 chassis service manual. I'm not sure if it shows what you need as I haven't replaced a radiator support before. Hopefully it helps.

Re: Radiator Support Install ???

Thanks for the help Carter but I believe the 68 is different from the 71. For instance, my frame mount is even with the frame, where the one you are showing is slightly lower than the frame....

I guess I am going to try and install with one of the rubber pieces below the radiator support even though I am not sure that is how it was....

I would really appreciate more info from someone who owns a 71 or 72...

Thanks to all who have responded so far!!

Working on this tonight if anyone can post..

Thanks,
CT
