2 piece driveline trouble
I have had trouble all week diagnosing this and had the vehicle acting like brakes are dragging etc. vibration was starting.
I jacked it up and ran it in high gear and WOW!!! what a bunch of noise and driveline jittering around..............I thought the rear end was gonner!!! I watched the area around the slip splines right behind the carrier bearing and noticed the most movement there. There was play in the rear u-joint. I turned it off and shook the shaft. The slip spline is shot also the rear joint. Question is which way to go with this..............replace as stock or go one piece??????? I turned the rear axle over back and forth the best I could by hand and all is smooth. The stethescope had noises all the way out to the drums so I thought bad brakes???? then with the stethescope out of my ears I heard the clanging up by the slip spline.

Re: 2 piece driveline trouble
Is this a long or short bed? It sounds like you have a bad center carrier that needs to be replaced.

Re: 2 piece driveline trouble
Could be. I am pulling it tommorow with the front shaft and getting the works replaced. I can't believe how sudden these problems came on.................but the splines were worn when I put the truck back together and u-joints questionab;le.......I told myself the day would come and i think it's here.

Re: 2 piece driveline trouble
If it's your K20 (sig) I would stick with the 2 piece. My slips splines were shot also. If it's more than a cruiser you could look into replacing the tubes with beefier ones also. I would take it to a reputable driveline builder.

Re: 2 piece driveline trouble
new 2 piece being built.............................with the upgraded carrier............can't do one piece due to the small yoke out of transfercase. would have to change it to bigger cross and mine is the course spline . The fine splines are easy to come up with.
The whole shebanfg will be around 385

Re: 2 piece driveline trouble
For the record: Upgraded to a 1 1/2 inch spline slip joint . 3 new joints 80,000 mile no grease heavy duty, new weld joint labor and balance was a total of $335.00.
Walker Driveline in Talent Oregon did the work. The truck is better than ever!!

Re: 2 piece driveline trouble
sweet.
Now you can ignore it for 10 - 30 years! (assuming the U-joints are sealed too) I love parts that thrive on neglect. |
