Seat swaps?

My father has an 86 pickup 3/4 heavy duty. Its in pretty good shape and all but due to the ride height and that the seat is kind of worn out he is having a hard time getting in and out. I posted an ad on craigs list looking for a good used seat and got a few responces. So after all the background here is the question. Will a seat from a newer truck an 88 2500 fit in the 86 without a lot of mods?and what about buckets from a 87 suberban with they fit other than a few extra holes? What about a 67-72 seat? thanks for any info.

Re: Seat swaps?

the newer bench seats work with modify the 86 bench seat bracket and for the burb seat you''ll need the seat bracket off the burb, two of the seat tabs weld on the cab floor

Re: Seat swaps?

A trick I learned from a fellow member...See if you can find a rear seat out of a crew cab. They are the same seat and are usually hardly worn.

Re: Seat swaps?

My 84 has a 88-94 seat in it. Doesn't seem to have any mods to the mounting point on the floor. So I don't know where they modified it at.

Re: Seat swaps?

From what I have been told. You are much better off (from the effort standpoint) if you can get the floor pan section from a Burb. Then just cut out and weld in the bracing you need.

Don't know if were talking buckets or bench, so everything I'm saying is assuming bench...

Something in the mounting between the seat bracket (slider) and the seat had to have been done. Seat brackets for 88-98 are much taller than those of a 73-87. On a 73-87, the bracket is made in such a way that the slider portion is pretty much right on top of the floor pan, so the seat is only an inch or two above the floor at the outer edges. On the 88-98 seats, the slider is attached to stands, so the seat is higher than the floor by probably 6 inches or so.

I tried to put an 89 seat into a 78, and found out that the stands were just too tall, not to mention there was a floor contour problem. So I figured I'd just mount the 89 seat to the 78 slider mechanism and solve the height problem... then found out that the bolt holes were way off, so I had to do some fabbing to pull it off. When all is said and done, the 88-98 seat is slightly narrower than the seat from a 73-87, but not really enough to matter.

Re: Seat swaps?

Thanks guys anybody know about 67-72 seats in a 86. Im leaning toward some burb buckets I found with a console but I also have here two really nice almost like new 67-72 benches.Id check it out myself but I don't want to take the seat out of the 86 till I can put something right back, maybe I'm lazy but I'd hate to pull it out and find out it won't work and put the old one back in. Especialy if someone can tell me thats been there and done that,Right? Thanks

Re: Seat swaps?

I used to have a few of the 68-72 trucks, but I'll be darned if I can remember how their seat mounts were. I'm pretty sure they were short and close to the floor, similar to the 73-87 trucks, but I doubt very seriously that it will be a bolt-in without some form of modification. It might be as simple as drilling new holes, or it might be more involved. When the body style changes, the floorpan layout changes with it. If you've got decent fab skills, a seat swap shouldn't take very long, even if you have to fab something up.

Re: Seat swaps?

Look for Dodge Ram seats. I think in 99, the seatbelt was moved to the seat. Prior years had belts on the cab pillar. The seats are large. The center console is HUGE!
