1971 SBC short water pump height
I keep getting water pumps from oreileys that put the water pump pulley about 3/8 too far out and I have shimmed the crank out and spaced out the alt bracket but want to correct it. Anyone have advice on making this right and where to get a water pump the right height? I don't want any shims on the crank, I just want it to be right, it was lined up with the old water pump and I just gave them my pump for a core and didn't think about measuring the height.

How about finding a deeper water pump pulley?

Re: 1971 SBC short water pump height
originally, the bolt pattern on short pump pullies were different than long pumps, then some one had this 'wonderful' idea of making the pumps have both bolt patterns. In otherwords, back in the day, you would never get it put togetherr before realizing something was wrong.

Re: 1971 SBC short water pump height
I have run into this before on pumps. What I did was put them in my press and pressed them deeper. Be careful though, you can break the pump body doing this. Done that too.

Re: 1971 SBC short water pump height
3 oreilley stores later, I found one that is 5-5/8
most were running about 1/4 too far and the one I took back was 3/8 too far out Moral of the story, take a tape and verify the pulley height. |

Re: 1971 SBC short water pump height
That sucks. Great tip. I never realized they could be that far off. I wonder how many guys are running misaligned pulleys now and don't even know it.
