Myths created by this board????????

I just read yet another post that has the GMC came with leafs Chevy came with coils BS. I don't believe it for a second. I think all of these trucks came with coils and leafs were optional, option number G70. Never seen an option number for coils....I have a GMC with coils and no option on glovebox. I have also looked at hundreds of these trucks and only seen a couple under one ton that were leaves. Does anyone have any documentation to prove me wrong?

Yeah, I'd like to see the docs too.

Even on just the Chevy side I've had enough debates about 3/4 ton and 1 ton, coil, leaf, HO72, HO52, blah blah blah....to be blue in the face. I agree with you 100% Tom. Some options at the dealerships shake up this whole strict theory about specific rear setups only coming with specific trucks...

Just this last weekend I saw a SWB GMC with an 8 lug coil rearend STOCK from the dealership (one owner). Explain that one to me.

chevy c10 w/ leafs

I have a stock '70 c10 with leafs....didn't know it was odd until the guys at the rod shop commented while it was on the lift, 1/2 ton leafs are out there.

I don't have documentation but just about every 3/4 GMC I've ever seen has leafs and most Chevy's are coil. Strange. Maybe it's a regional thing and some parts of the country got a different package as standard equipment.

My 72 C10 has factory leafs. It was part of the towing option. 3/4 & 1 tons were not the only ones to get leafs. I always thought leafs were more common, but I have talked to a few members that had never seen a 67-72 with leafs. Weird.

my 71 chevy c/20 and it has coils but my parts truck a 72 cheyenne super 10 had leafs as an option on the glove box sticker

I can't recall seeing a 1/2 ton GMC that DIDN'T have leafs ... and never recall seeing a 1/2 ton Chevy that DIDN'T have coils ... i suspect, as Scottri stated, that it may be a regional thing.

I have owned eight GMC's all of them 1/2 ton leaf and have owned six 1/2 ton Chevy's all of them coil. I have a 67-69 GMC Master Parts Catalog that the Dealership had. All the diagrams show leafs but they do list E-Brake cables and ect. for coil springs also.

i have never seen a 3/4 ton with coils. but almost ever 1/2 i have seen had them. some with an over load leaf.

i think you are right with the coils being standard on all 1/2s but i dont think the 3/4 tons were that way.

It could be a difference of years. I have a 70 C20 chevy with leafs, and a 72 C20 chevy with coils. I am not sure what configurations came on different years, but in the midwest there seems to be a mixture of leafs and coils on C10, C20, gmc and chevy. Maybe just different options on different model years, but I have never paid that close attention.

I have coils on my GMC, and every 1/2 ton Chevy I've ran across had leafs! Only in Canada, eh? The plot thickens...

I've never seen a GMC Canadian built in Oshawa that wasn't coils... 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton as standard equipment. The ones I have seen with leafs had it listed as an option.

Tom is correct on Chevy trucks--standard equipment was coils---leafs were an option. I don't know about GMC's or Canadian trucks.

my 72 1/2 ton chevy parts truck is leaf, my 68 gmc 1/2 ton is leaf and my 71 1/2 ton chevy is coil. I have no option stickers on any of them...I lie... the 71 has one... it was painted over though.

My 72 Cheyenne 1/2 ton has leafs as an option on the build sheet from the glove box door. My 71 Cheyenne has coils but are listed as HD rear springs as well as having the overload leaf spring option.
My 69 1/2 ton short bed frame has leafs on one side and coils on the other side with what I believe to be a dirt track option for making constant turns----or maybe it's leafs on one end and coils on the other end-----oh I don't know====pass me another beer so this will clear up!!!! (:>)

I have parted more than 50 of these trucks and have only had 2 1/2 ton chevys with leafs and both where listed as options on the glove box.I have only had 1 1/2 ton GMC with coils and still have it now it is listed as HD rear springs on glove box.I have never seen a 3/4 ton 2wd with coils and I've looked at 1000's

Not a myth in some aspects and I can provide scans of the data showing that all of the below is FACT according to our GM printed data,
1967 2wd 1/2ton GMC's were only available with LEAF springs,
1967 GMC 1/2 ton 2wd NO OPTIONAL REAR COILS PERIOD
1967 2wd 1/2ton Chevy were only available with COIL springs
1967 2wd 1/2ton Chevy NO OPTIONAL LEAF SPRINGS PERIOD
in 1968,69&70 GMC's became available with COIL springs as standard equipment and leafs optional, in 1971&72 GMC were offered with either LEAF or COIL springs as standard equipment. CHEVY however came stock with coil and you could option in leaf springs beginning in 1968 and continueing through 1972 and NEVER offered rear leafs as standard equipment on the 2wd 1/2ton.
GMC sales data said that only 1/2ton 2wd GMC's came STANDARD EQUIPMENT with Leaf springs in 1967- & again in 1971-72 they said this WHICH is true, and Chevy always came coil spring rear on 1/2 ton 2wd as standard equipment which is true. So the myth as a large portion of truth to it its just it didn't cover every year as most thought.
This info can be found on the 1967-72 GMC sales brochures and 1967-72 Chevy sales brochures by looking under Specifications then look at Springs Rear and they show what was optional and what was standard equipment.

Well Paul is probably right ............except in Canada. 67 GMC's had coils and like others have said all 67-72's were mostly coil and a few got ordered with optional leafs. We're different up here eh.

Wes...wanted to see proof that coil springs were an option on GMC's.... if what Paul says is true they were not. The the GMC leafs, Chevy coils is true for 67 only, the rest of the time coils were standard...leafs were optional except for 71-72 on GMC's which ethier were standard, which explains why my 72 GMC doesn't have it's coils listed as an option. As with most myths there is a little bit of truth in there somewhere. Thanks for the true answer Paul

I had a 71 GMC that I took all the running gear out of and installed it under my 67 Chevy. I guess I got lucky to find a 71 GMC with a coil rear end. Anyway the front crossmember is a lot bigger that the one that was on the 67 Chevy. I even had to drill out the holes in the frame to a bigger diameter just to get the GMC front crossmember bolts to fit. How many different crossmembers were offered for these trucks?
