First drive in the Suburban - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Sorry for the big pics. Haven't learned to re-size pics yet.

Well as some of you may already know, I bought a suburban a little over a year ago. Since then I have tinkered with her and got everything but the A/C going on her. These pics are a couple of months old but they are from the first day I got to legally drive her on the road.

Mine is the green suburban. It's a factory big block 3/4 ton. The orange one is my dad's (Muleman100). It is a factory big block 1/2 ton.

First stop was to AutoZone to get a rear view mirror so I could pass inspection. Put the first piece that glues to the windshield on backwards and it would NOT come off. So I got to go back in and buy a second one. Ironically my dad can not get one to glue to his windshield for the life of him.

Next stop was the car wash to get them ready for the cruise night. I think we spent more washing them than they are worth!

We were some of the first ones to arrive at the cruise night. Although we look like we were the only ones there I can assure you there were between 100 and 125 cars by dusk.

They got a fair amount of attention; mainly people asking why they only had 3 doors on them. Every week the cruise night has about 4-10 other 67-72 trucks. They almost always B-line it to the suburban when they get there. That is what I like. Having something familiar and classic, but still unusual.

This one isn't owned by me or my family but the next day we were driving to Austin and when we stopped for gas this pulled in. We chatted with the guy for a few minutes and then went our seperate ways.

Hope you enjoyed it. I am no story teller like Longhorn Man but I would like to post little mini stories for everyone whenever the chance arises.

Gets me going about how I miss mine on the road. Darn antique brakes!

The old orange 1/2 ton already has a new door skin and a new partial rear left qtr ready to put on. After some minor fab to finish the qtr she will get a new paint job.

Muleman100: mirror glue to windshield in the kit it has a pre clean for the glass before the glue and the kits i have used work very well. i also use a razor blade on the glass in the mirror area first.

nice subs and always nice to have a father and son chev thing together.

i HATE the glue on kind. I can never get them to stay on there. So far my moon eyes one is up there longer than any other one I have ever installed. I blame part of that luck on the fact that it is made of plastic and weighs less than stock ones.

Thank's for the responses everyone. Driving the suburban is ALOT more fun than driving my old 70 chevy pickup.

LHM, I'm just glad it was those cheap aftermarket mirrors and not the expensive factory reproductions.

67Mach1, The green suburban is from Austin. It was on Craigslist and someone linked the ad up to the forum. After looking at that thread for about 3 weeks I decided I would always regret it if I didn't at least call. Fortunately he still had it right when I got a bonus at work so I bought it. The orange one is from Dallas. My parents were at a swap meet and a guy had a pic of it for sale.

Nice burbs and thanks for the pictures. I finally got mine started on Monday and took her down the street then parked her in the carport. It really got me started on wanting to paint her and get the seats fixed, but I'll have to wait. I'm going to a car show tomorrow in Leavenworth, KS. Hope to see some burbs there too, but doubt it. I haven't yet seen one around town.

LHM, Thank goodness that were the lucky ones that do get it and appreciate it.

Joekan, If you see some burbs take some pics for us. Also I know what you mean. After driving mine I immediately wanted to start tearing into her. However I thought about it and decided to buy everything I need and save up about $3-5k then start working on her. I would rather wait and do it right that start now and have a half done project that is worse than when I started.
