350 Turbo vs 700r transmission shifter questions
My truck came as a pile of parts. It came with a 350 engine and 350 turbo and a Lokar shifter that mounts on the top of the 350 turbo transmission. I have a couple of questions. I have ran across a 700r transmission I can get for trading some old stuff I am not using. If I were to put the 700R in, would the holes already in the floor pan line up the same as the 350 turbo as the holes are already cut for the 350 turbo? Also, is there anyway to modify the Lokar shifter to work on the overdrive transmission or would I have to buy a new shifter? Thanks

Re: 350 Turbo vs 700r transmission shifter questions
well since nobody else will, i will give it a shot.
i would deff go with the overdrive tranny, IF it is in good condition. there is a chance the hole in the floor board would line up, but if your worried about that then doing this swap might not be for you, because you will have to re-engineer your tranny mount and driveshaft. and as far as the shifter goes, it sounds like you have what they call a tranny mount shifter. im not sure if it will go onto the 700r4 or not. if it dosnt, you can always make it into a floor mount (i think you can anyways, i have installed both and i think its just the bracket that is different) however you will not be able to shift it down to gear 1 manually. i know those shifters are expensive, and im not saying that it will indeed work on an OD tranny, but if you can do without manually selecting first gear, i would sure give it a shot.

Re: 350 Turbo vs 700r transmission shifter questions
I dont know for sure, but I think the 350/400's are the same size. The 700R4 is the same size, but longer. All trans mounts are the same for the 350/400's but different for the 700r4. I have no idea on actual sizes though - just know part #'s are different...

Re: 350 Turbo vs 700r transmission shifter questions
My truck came with the 700r/ lokar in it. The previous owner also had a 350/lokar while the 700 was being built. Same hole was used for both.
Different shifter for each trans though.

Re: 350 Turbo vs 700r transmission shifter questions
Ill throw in my $.02, I have a 350/700r4 going into my 68 panel and I've done alot of reading and asking. much of the info you need i here in the threads. the 700 is longer by about 2" and the auto trans crossmember can be moved back, or some even say you can move the motor mounts forward. Not sure whats best, however if you do the motor mounts the driveshaft should work. make sure you have an 88 or later tranny or that 700 may be a nice paperweight(something about a auxilary valvebody, 10 vane pump and some other stuff) any way the later models are much better. Also if it is from behind a six banger it might not like a built 8cyl. If im off on any of this stuff make sure you guys jump in and save me and buildinga55 some trouble.

Re: 350 Turbo vs 700r transmission shifter questions
I know the length difference in the two. My truck came with a new Lokar shifter that is for a 350 Turbo. I have a buddy that has a New 350 Turbo I was going to buy, but now I have a guy wanting to trade me a good, but not rebuilt or new, 700r for a bunch of old parts I will never use again. He bought it from a buddy and Said it was a good tranney??? and it came from a 93 Camaro. So I am just trying to decide what to do. If I buy the 350 Turbo, everything on the truck is already set up. If I go with the 700r, I will need a different shifter, probably recut the holes in the floor, buy a different shifter and move the transmission mount back and shorten the drive shaft, lockup kit etc etc. Decisions decisions
