Carb fires suck
Just as I was fixin to trade off my new Edelbrock 600 for an Edelbrock 750...POOF, I get a flame job UNDER my hood.
Damage is not bad, but I still ended up ripping my carb down for a rebuild, and good scrubbing. All the plastic melted, andeverything is black instead of pretty. Huge bummer, it's been running sooooooo awsome lately. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. Trying to clean up the left over damage from the Dope-Smokin-Old-Man I've been dubbed the Longhorn Freak/Fanatic/Expert, I just hope I can live up to it. FINALLY got the HORNIAC...a '70 one ton Longhorn with a Pontiac 350/350 and lots of 'personality'. Check out The Longhorn Webite. Actually, I was getting cocky and tried starting it too quickly. It fired, but at the wrong moment, and kicked the engine backwards a bit. Well, it was just enough to send the fire up through the 'just opened enough' intake valve.
I heard the fire ignite, and I put it out by crnaking the pee out of it untill it fired up. Might have sucked some paper ashes in too, but it was better than fire bottle juice. (always carry a bottle) I was able to drive it home and all, just gave enough damage to not feel right trading it sight unseen. (interity sucks sometimes) ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. Fire is cool to play with........but not on carbs! I have seen a couple carbs on fire also,been pretty lucky(a few crispy wires,& missin half of my beard one time!)......69

a dumbass i went to school with burned his eyebrows off because he was looking down a carb on a motor that was running and it backfired through the carb, people look really strange with no eyebrows thats not to say i haven't done stupid things while working on a car..... sorry about yoru luck

I told you all about the fuel line splitting on my 402 a couple of weeks ago, and I thought it was just gas fumes from a fill up.......I have the new tank from WES, waiting on the filler to come from the local marine dealer (Boy, are they RARE in Tucson) and yesterday I was in Harbor Freight when someone walked in and told us the gas station at the corner was on fire. Someone came in to fill up and had a fire under the hood of their F&#d pickup. That shut down the neighborhood. They lost their truck! This stuff is serious! I can't tell you how lucky I feel with driving my truck helping my friend move and having a manifold full of raw gas!

Yep, carb or manifold fires. Had a Aspen that was running a 383, dual 4 barrels when the same thing happened to me in high school. Just glad that the car was in the driveway instead of the garage!

I guess I am lucky, I haven't had a fire in mine yet, I did find a fuel line that was leaking on the intake manifold though. Somebody hacksawed through the metal line by the carb and put a fuel filter in. (of course it is 5/16'' instead of 3/8'' like the rest of the line LOL) Anyone that hasn't replaced the fuel lines in their truck aleady should at least look at them, I just touched the old line going in the fuel pump and it started leaking.

Every time I've had a fire (and I've had a few), it is some stupid mistake. On this one, my truck quit on the freeway at night. Pulled off the fuel line at the carb to see if I was pumping, no fuel. Found a break in the line, got under and fixed it. Got back in, fired it up, pulled out, FIRE! Forgot to reconnect the line at the carb! Melted the secondaries, but new cap and wires, and I nursed this back from central CAL to Seattle.

Having an engine fire must be a rite of passage, eh? My fire on the ol' 69 occured two years ago. I was starting it up and 'WHOOMP'!! So I say to myself, "Self, what the hell was that?" I then saw the orange glow on my roommate's truck. I then proceeded to run into the house and grab my buddy, the ABC fire extinguisher. When I got back outside, there were flames rolling out of both wheelwells. I shot the extinguisher up into each wheelwell and then popped the hood to see a HUGE fireball rolling out. Once the fire was out, I found out that the motor backfired, and blew the fuel line off the carb. Since I have an electric fuel pump, it kept pumping till I shut the key off. Damage included f#$%ing up the show winning paint on my hood, melting my K&N, melting ALL my underhood wiring, and a few other scorched things. Needless to say, all of my fuel system is now hardline and Aeroquip steel braided lines with AN fittings. Live and learn, eh?

Did you put on an oil pressure switch for that electric pump? Personaly, onless there is Fuel injection, I'll stick with an old pushrod driven pump for that exact reason.

The truck used to be TBI injected. It does have an oil pressure shut off, but it (fuel pump) still runs through the computer, and thus runs for a few seconds when the key is initially turned on. I ditched the fuel injection because there were WAY too many bugs that we couldn't work out.
