tapping crank snout

I have a 66 250, I know what size to drill and tap the crank but what depth can I safely drill to, to avoid any trouble? thanks.

The crank is in the engine so I will be doing it by hand, am I asking for trouble? lol

I did my 283, i just went with the bolt length. Hav'nt had any issues.
