Pull Engine With Hood On?????
Is it possible/reasonable to try to pull engine without removing the hood? If I can avoid it I will.
Someone please save me if this is a really BAD idea! |

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
It's a bad idea!!!
That is, "If you have to ask, it's a bad idea." People who've removed a lot of engines know a lot of tricks picked up from many engine removals. With a few turns at it under your belt, you'll be able to predict which way the engine will swing and sway as you pull it, and what points you'll have to stop and adjust the engine height. After pulling the engine with all safety precautions in place the first few times, then you can try pulling it with the hood on. Yes, it can be done, but to prevent damage to the hood you have to know which side of the hood latch and braces you need to start out on, what your main obstacles you'll have to work around getting past the linage, exhaust and steering, how to avoid putting the engine through the core support and so on. You'll decide if loosening the hood hinges or mounts will help or hinder you and if you want to take the wheels off and lower the front or not. Thinking and planning won't anticipate everything, especially since every truck is unique. Do yours the safe way the first time, with an eye towards figuring out the answers for the next time. When you get to the point that you don't have to ask us if it's a bad idea; that's when it's not a bad idea any longer.

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
I think it can be done, but it is only 4 bolts. Why take a chance?

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
It can be done. But why take the chance of more damage than just taking the hood off?
My vote, BAD IDEA.

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
When I took my motor out for my recent rebuild, I took the transmission out with the engine. Lots less work overall and yeah, you should take the hood off.
Takes only a minute and gives you a heck of allot more room to move around in. The trouble of removing the motor from the transmission before you remove it from the truck is a bit more work than taking them both out together with the hood removed. You will need a load spreader (if that's what they are called) on your hoist to get the engine and transmission out at the same time. I have a 700R4 and I still had plenty of room to take them both out at the same time. Don

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
I wouldn't do it either. The easiest way I've discovered to re-locate the hood is to drill a 1/8th inch hole throught the hinge bracket and hood on both sides. Remove the hood. When it comes time to reassemble the hood, insert the bolts loosely, and jog the hood until you can put the drill through the holes. Tighten down the bolts, and remove the drill bits.

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
I like that drill bit idea.
I've pulled my BBC with the hood on, but I don't think I'd do it again. I'm voting to remove the hood.

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
The idea with the drill bit sounds pretty good but like me, I don´t like to drill any holes anywhere unless I have to.
I marked mine with a fine tipped permanent marker and lined them back up when I put the hood back on. I would take the hood off. If I remember right, it would have been in the way when I yanked my engine. I had the whole front end off anyways. That made it alot easier.

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
the few minutes to remove hood is worth the effort//if you're working alone just hook up the hoist to the front of the hood unbolt the hinges after marking and walk the hood of without any damage//should take less than 12minutes to do the hood removal

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
I know it's hard to drill the hole, but it's far less damage then chipping paint with a mis-aligned hood, and after everything is assembled the hole is so small you have to look for it to see it. All you need to do is use a "Q-tip" to put a dab of paint/sealer in the hole.

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
you could leave your home after thanksgiving dinner and contaminate the bathroom at the corner gas station just to keep from stinking your own up.
But more bad could come from it than good. |

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
It is easier with the hood off. Get some friends to help. I finally bought an engine tilter from my local Tractor Supply and you can r and r the engine with the transmission in the truck. I have done it. You just need to support the trans in the front with the engine out.

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
I have pulled hundreds of them & never pull the hood. I remove one hinge bolt & loosen the other & open it up further. Or take out the front bolt of the hinge & loosen the other & put a block of wood in it.

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
If your not scared about pulling an engine, but scared about pulling the hood off.... You may want to think twice about what your doing....but seriously.

Re: Pull Engine With Hood On?????
If you have a cherry picker, then removing the engine is possible with the hood on. Removing the transmission will make it easier.
If you only have a chain hoist, then removing the hood and tranny is mandatory!
