Wow! Very cool! It looks like they even squeezed a C/40-60 in the middle there!
Something else to ponder: This was in the mid-60's before the days of diesels with anything resembling serious power. That rig has somewhere around 18 tons of trucks, plus the weight of the truck and trailer... and probably has a couple hundred HP and a few hundred lb-ft of torque with a 10 or 12 speed. That must have been one SLOW ride up any kind of hill!! |

No problem, right? because you can always downshift and use the engine braking to slow down.... ...until you twist the driveshaft in two. Then - you've got a real problem! He rode it out, steering around the curves until the truck started up the other side. As it came to a stop on the upward path, and then started rolling back, he cut the wheels so that the truck would back off the side of the road...which it did, and off the side of the hill down into a valley. As he trudged back to the nearest town (on foot) he thought "...man! I've lost my job this time for sure!". Well - he didn't. He won a "safe driving commendation" because nobody got hurt!

during the 80's i was doing pdi for ford dealership
just about every day a truck load would come in and drop off cars and trucks i would check them in and then send them thur the shop to be pre-delivery inspection then i would test drive one or two for fords Quality like the first year tbird s/c
