R10 Silverado? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok, I am a newbie, and have always wanted an 87 chevy truck or Sierra.

i finally purchased an 87 silverado long bed, but when i went to the autoparts store, they could not find "Silverado, or 1500". I assumed it was an R10. Is that the official name for these trucks?

Excuse my simplistic question, but i did not know of the R10.

the 2 wheel drives are considered C models and the 4 wheel drives are K models

Is yours a GMC? I have an '87 GMC and it comes up in a few parts searches as an R model too.

Yep, they were C/K's on up through 1986. In 1987 we started designing the replacement truck, internally known as the GMT400. This new truck was also going to be known as a C/K so we had to come up with some kind of designation to keep them straight during the interim.

Viola! Carryover trucks were R = 2wd, V = 4wd. Probably a poor choice of letters, in hindsight.

As an aside we never did it that way again. When we did the GMT800, and then the GMT900 versions we changed the model numbers, rather than the letter designations, to keep them separate.

Also - "Silverado" was a trim level back then (ie, Custom Deluxe, then Scottsdale, then Silverado), not a separate model like it is today.

This is a good find, Ive been curious on this same thing myself. I own an '87 Chevy V-10, and wondered why the "R" and "V" designations...

I also have a 87 chevy they are refered to as an R10 for the 2wd and the V10 for the 4wd. all the parts are interchangeable except for basically the fuel delivery. the Pre-86 trucks were all carb'd and the 87 was a TBI set up.

In 87 when the new trucks came out, they changed the 73-87 trucks from [ C and K ] to [ R and V ], respectively. This is because the new 88-98 (on the lots in late 87 as 88 models) trucks were now the C and K models. What you would think is a 87 C10 is really an R10, and what you would think is a 87 K10 is really a V10.
