Tilt Column in a 66 GMC
Folks,
looking to pickup a tilt column for my 66 GMC. Can you guys tell what year donor vehicles I should be looking for. I can pick up a complete column from a 82 Surburban will that fit? don't mind if I have to modify it. Got a couple of yards around here and just need a guide to help in choosing. I have read the tilt threads but they are not so specific on whats best donor. Thanks

Re: Tilt Column in a 66 GMC
To the best of my knowledge the tilt column from '73-87 was basicly the same they are a bit larger od at the mounting point ,I would avoid those with a multi function switch cause they were a pain when new, If you pop the epoxy, the colapsable end will shorten up enough to bolt to the rag joint
The suburban 2wds shared the suspension /brake parts with the pick ups of the same series so they are good donors

Re: Tilt Column in a 66 GMC
I believe the Van columns are the 'choice' ones...Vans with dash ignitions

Re: Tilt Column in a 66 GMC
If anyone could post pics of the tilts they have in their trucks that would help.

Re: Tilt Column in a 66 GMC
70's Van Column. The van column is short, and you have to use a u joint. The positive is that you can use a collapasable steering shaft. I welded a couple of nuts to the column to bolt up the mount plate too. The other differnce is the harness plug.

Are you using the ignition key in the column?

Re: Tilt Column in a 66 GMC
I finally found a good tilt column to use. Got a rebuilt column from a 73 Chevy van coming. Got a great price including shipping to Canada so cannot complain. Want to get that in as soon as possible as my original column needs work. So best of both worlds. Get me a tilt and a rebuilt one to boot. Can soon strike that off my list. Only 900 items to go LOL
