Safety For a Canadian Truck
I think i'm headed for some serious headaches as when i bought my truck it was no where near being ready for a safety or insurance and i never had plans on getting it on the road right away, so i started the frame off restoration and i'm stuck facing some potential problems. I'm putting a full air ride suspension, including a rear c notch and i'm also going to have to do some welding on my frame. Now i'm Manitoba and i think all of canada that whenever a vehicle is insured under a new owner you need to get it safetied, which includes a real good once over of the vehicle, by government inspectors. Now i don't about how legal air bags are but i know that welding on the frame of a vehicle will void any chance of a safety Now do you see my problem. If anyone knows the legalities of this kinda stuff for where ever in the world you are any info would be appreciated! Otherwise i'm going to have to go get a "Safety" if you know what i mean, and i don't want to get in anymore legal trouble The pigs, i mean cops hate me here!
Jared

hmmm, not too sure but is there anychance you can insure it now and get it on the road then do your bags and c notch...once they have inspected it? im sure you wont have problems anyways, like all the hot rodders around these parts have bags and c notches...and they all have plates, im sure you will be fine

My friend had his motor mounts welded onto the frame of his s15 the inspector had no problem since it was done by a certified welder. Not sure about Manitoba but in BC the only time a vehicle has to be inspected is when; its from out of province, it was Dot'd or it was taken off the road for some other reason, so if it has been always registered in Manitoba, never been dot'd you should be fine

I don't see any great worries, most of the problems arise if your truck came from a different province. When I bought my truck I had no problems getting it insured, no safety check, no nothing. But then again I live in BC, perhaps the provincial laws are different between us. As far as cutting your frame etc. etc. go ahead and get the work done. I don't think the Manitoba bureau of Motor Vehicles will notice, that is, if you don't tell them. What they don't don't know won't hurt, just as long as you are sure any modifications you make have been done before and have a proven safety record.

Ithink just make it look really clean not hacked up and keep the squriters wipers all the legal parts and you will be fine. If you dont want to see the squriter hoses just run them from the inside of the cab. and use a rubber gromet to stop the water from coming in! Smooth idea Eh.

I have a buddy that has a 63 rambler that was mounted on a new frame. The kicker here is that the rambler frame was welded to a 1980 Chevy swb 4x4 frame to make it into a mud toy. If he can get that car saftied with having 2 frames welded together, then I don't see much problem with a c notch and air bags. He also lives in Manitoba, in The Pas.
Best advise I can give you is call MPIC or go talk to your closest manitoba certified safety inspection shop. It can be certified by any journeyman mechanic that works at any manitoba inspection station. They will tell you exactly waht will pass and what will fail. Good luck man

Just because the mechanic has a jorneyman paper does not mean he can do a safety in Manitoba.
The department of motor vehicles puts on a course for people that want to do safety checks... you dont even have to have a journeyman certificate to do a safety. You have to have all the tools and measurment equipment necessary and a shop to perform the safety in.

Yeah, you just have to go to any service station that has that little green sign on the outside that says they are certified by the province of manitoba to do safety inspections.

Damn!! Well if any of you guys remember i went through a lot of trouble just trying to get the truck shipped back here as i bought it in BC. It has never been registed in Manitoba before, so i know it needs a safety before it can be insured. I have a lot of plans for it and i wouldn't have taken it down to the frame if i knew i was going to have to get the damn thing up to standards then have to rip it apart to put the new suspension in it again and i'll be stuck with all of these brand new parts that are no longer useful to me. (Drum brakes, rear springs and other expensive stuff). ahhh crap! thanks for the input guys
