72 1/2 ton brakes rear
How do I know which size shoes I need for the rear. Parts store says 1 is 2" and the other is 2 3/4" . Is that the width of the shoe itself or what? They told me to bring the shoes from one side and they would match ,kind of hard to do when I drive it daily. But I can take a drum off to measure if all I need to know is width of shoe. I hope this makes sense.

Yes it is the width of the shoe. You either have light duty or heady duty brakes.

can light duty be converted to heavy by swapping shoes and drums?
