exhaust clearance lowered trucks
has anybody ran exhaust inside the framerails? is that even a safe/smart thing to do? i would like to go though the hanger bearing crossmember instead of under it. has anybody done this or what can be done for clearance on lowered trucks.

Many people do it. You must cut 4" holes out of the crossmember, I recommend welding in a 1 1/2" thick piece of 4" pipe. You also need shorty headers.

here is a pic
Here is what I did to my frame to route the exhaust. There are many of us that have done this. If you want to see it with exhaust actually routed check out Slammed67's web site. I used 4" pipe cut at 1/2" thick. We cut the frame with a sawsall and welded them in. You can also check out Early Classics Web site as they did this mod to Dave's 68.

Boy, your shop looks nice! If having a painted floor makes it easier to work on your truck, I should put that task on my list of things to do, BEFORE I start on my truck (which I have now parked to begin the off-the-frame restification.

How low can you go with long tube headers and it exiting out behind the rear wheels? I was thinking a 3/6 or 3/5 drop for my 70 C20...will I have problems with that?

ChevLoRay, I wish I had a shop but that is just my two car garage that my wife also wedges her mini van into every night! I painted the floor and the stuff is great to clean up oil or other spills. Make sure you get the oil based stuff as the water based stuff sucks.
HotRod, you should have no trouble with a 3/6 or 3/5 drop. You probably wouldn't want to do this, but there is very minimal cost in doing it.

Has any buddy tried stacks inorder to eliminate the clearance problems with the rear axle? I'm looking into this I'm just not sure how it will look on a fleet side! Another Idea I'm considering is putting a second floor in at wheel well height and using the area inbetween for running pipes and wiring if need be!

Wow thats cool XXL I think a set of stacks would look good on a flatbed, or even on a stepside.....but I think they would look out of place on a fleetside truck....crazyL

I wonder how those stacks would look as side pipes on a fleetside? Kinda like the way corvetts had em you know...under the door.
